Mike & Molly - from the Debut to The End

Hi guys, I finally came back to this board upon hearing the news that
it's ending this spring. I'm usually the last to hear about things anyway.

I love this show too, just like most of you, but I've accepted that it's best days are behind it. I knew this when it went into reruns and before that when the Mike & Molly got married sooner than we expected.

I remember the night the series debuted and when I came here, after a few episodes and reviewed it in October of 2010. (Which I just re-read for the first time in a long while.)

After leaving my review, I came to this board & read almost nothing but hatred for a show starring two overweight people. Many saying it was 'setting a bad example'. To who? People with a weight issue would have it, whether this show existed or not. Or even if Roseanne had existed or not.

We also had those who said it would only last a few weeks or one season. I defended the show. It was so great to see a sitcom starring people who didn't look 'perfect'. A great story of love found between two people who share a common problem in America, being overweight.

They even made weight jokes at their own expense too, in being able to laugh at themselves and each other and still show how much in love they were.
Along with the main idea was an offbeat look at friendship & family as well.

We should be very glad it lasted 'this' long. When the show debuted, there were almost no really good sitcoms on (sorry, not a fan of B.B. Theory, How I Met Your Mother or Rules of Engagement). Aside from those NBC had nothing left, ABC's attempts were lame and really, only "2 & 1/2 Men" held my interest.

That & FOX's animation night on Sundays.

I'll always love this show and personally, I'm very happy to have proven others wrong who said, "A show about fat people wont even last a season". I went out on a limb and boldly predicted it would go 5 or better and I was correct. ...and that's good enough for me.

Don't be sad it's over folks, just be glad it was there and that we have it in
re-runs and on DVD & whatever else is out there. I just hope there's a really good finale for it in a few weeks.

Good luck to all the cast members, in your next projects and thank you for
a very funny, touching and even meaningful television situation comedy...which these days is rare.

Thanks for a really great reason to laugh, when I needed it the
most, especially in 2010, some times in between and more recently in the past near 6 months.

It's nothing but the same generic sitcoms that are on every TV network. The only difference is they got two overweight people to star in the show and made it a gimmick. The show was funny like many before, during and after and was nothing game changing and honestly wont be missed.

In what way did they make it "a gimmick"? Very few storylines involving their weight once they dropped the OA aspect.

I wonder how he can say it wont be missed. 

Between 8 to 12 million people watched this show for nearly 6 years. It does have a solid fan base. It may not have been a so-called 'game changer' but what's more important, is .....

It was a good sitcom that camealong when TV needed something lighter
than 2 & 1/2 Men but less boring than Rules Of Engagement or How I Met Your Mother.

Cash may not miss it but he/she is seriously outvoted in that respect.

I'd be astounded if anyone could actually make a 'game changing' sitcom these days. That is, one with as live audience. Mike & Molly was a work horse sitcom, it didn't get big ratings but it wasn't cancelled by CBS until now ....andfans stuck with it through that and the always will like it.

Just because people watched it doesn't mean that a year from now anybody is gonna be sitting on their couch saying "how great would it be if Mike and Molly was still on". This show will be lumped into syndication like so many before it and will be replaced with something else.

"It came along when people needed something lighter but not boring"? Do you really think that 2 and a half men or himym are "boring" compared to Mike and Molly? And do you really think there is or was nothing else on TV that was "light but not boring"?

None of these by network sitcoms are anything to be missed and are so easily replaced.

They didn't have to make it a gimmick in the storyline. Storyline wise this show was basically the exact same as every other show out there. The gimmick was just in their looks as they were trying to be the opposite of the "why is everyone on TV beautiful" thing. The only thing that separated this show from every other 20 minute cbs, abc, NBC ect sitcom was the fact that they were overweight. If they were slim and beautiful the show probably would've gotten cancelled before season 1 finished.

HAPPI : Well first, this show did have 'millions' of viewers. Not M*A*S*H like numbers but enough. So those few just might be saying they wish the show was staying on or later, still on.

Lumped into syndication. Case you haven't noticed, every sitcom in history has been 'lumped' into syndicated reruns.I Love Lucy being the original & first. That's not news to anybody. That's just how TV works, we watch a show for along time, it's run ends and it goes into reruns.

(Personally, I wish a local channel where Ilive here would axe the
Seinfeld reruns. It's been syndicated for 20 years now and I've seen them all.)

YES, I tired to like How I Met Your Mother and Rules Of Engagement but I simply found them dull. We can't all like them. I do know Big Bang Theory is funny but it's about a generation way younger than me, so I can't get into that one too much either.

My point with that statement, regarding Mike & Molly, is that is was a nice change to see a sitcom about 2 people falling in love who weren't 'Moncia & Chandler' or some other 'near perfect looking people' .

Compared to what was being offered on TV in 2010, YES, Mike and Molly was better, for MY tastes. If anyone else found something to their liking, wonderful, I was talking about how 'I' felt about it.

Lastly, maybe in your opinion the shows we've been talking about aren't as high on the ladder as say All In The Family or Happy Days or (again) M*A*S*H ....but they do have their fans and there will be people that watch those shows.

Sitcoms replaceable? Well of course. ALL sitcoms, dramas and other scripted TV is replaceable. Because eventually (again) they'll have their time, end and be replaced with a new series.

As for Mike & Molly, when it's over there's a scant few sitcoms left with a live audience (I've never been crazy about those ones that are just 'filmed'.)

Of those few on the air, I hope they do get to last. One of them is already is reruns.

So, I really like the show and you don;t really like it. Taht's called a stalemate. Which means, we could banter about this forever. ..but ,I've made all the points I can on this and that's enough. 

Have a good one.

I'm a bit late but...not a bad ending.

It seemed like such a short run, despite being over 5 years but,
at least they didn't just up and yank it off the air, without a conclusion.

When Season 6 comes out on DVD,
I'm going back and watch them all over again.  
