What was a WTF storyline for you?
The storyline where Lord Grantham was into that war widow woman, they just dropped it too without resolving anything.

shareI thought any of the episodes with someone trying to blackmail the family were unrealistic. Even though it was the 20th century, I expect that Lord Grantham would have had enough influence with the police to suppress such attempts or be given enough latitude by the police to do it themselves.
It wasn't that long ago that an Earl with a large estate would have been a serious authority over their estate, answerable only to Parliament, superior nobility and possibly the county sheriff. There would have been few limits on their ability to defend their family members on their own property, possibly limited only on the use of violence.
And as you might have noticed, none of the blackmail attempts succeeded in the end. And it was clearly because of the earl's high status within society.
shareWhich is why I had real difficulty with the Vera Bates storyline. In fact, I thought that Lord Grantham would have found out about Lady Mary's indiscretion when Vera Bates threatened to sell the story to papers and especially since his valet didn't want to leave. If Lord Grantham can neutralize Richard Carlisle then in reality Vera Bates would have gotten into serious trouble trying to pull what she did with the aristocracy.
shareYeah, that one was kind of strange. The one that was a real "huh?" storyline for me was the one revolving around that infantryman with a burned face who claimed to be Cousin Patrick. I remember Edith and Mary arguing about whether or not he was legit and Lord Grantham saying he was going to look into it, but I don't recall there being any resolution.
shareI am just starting the show and watched this episode last night and YES, it was so cringeworthy. I didn't buy his story at all and that weird hand thing, that I GUESS was supposed to be a signature signal or Patrick's maybe?, was so forced and fake. Then he just disappears with no sign and no conclusion to the story? I will pay attention to the next few episodes to see if it's brought up again. but it seems like such a waste of time.
Which is a shame because I liked his scenes with Edith and if they just didn't add the heir part, it would have been a good storyline for her.
Agree. In fact, both times the Granthams ventured into infidelity. Cringey.
All of Edith’s storylines.
Anna’s rape was just too much for a show like this. Here they really succumbed to the American tv drama trope of trying incorporate current social justice issues into the plot.
Matthew's miracle was a bit much. Hopping out of the chair with the "it was just a bruised nerve" and the doctors "oops, I made a mistake."
shareO'Brien placing the soap to hopefully injure Cora. WTF?
Edith Crawley, with no previous experience, running a magazine. WTF?

Everyone has mentioned most of the ones I find hard to believe. I would also like to add O'Briens and Thomas's on again/off again loyalties.
shareI'll add Thomas hitting on the Turkish guy. I guess it was to show how arrogant Thomas is but I honestly can't imagine anyone considering the time and his position would openly make a pass at a guest of the house like that. If the Turkish guy made the first move, ok but not the other way around. I know it was just a device to get Thomas to show him Mary's room but that was a WTF moment for me. sooooo stupid.
