I would rather pull my nails out
than watch this
shareI loved this show so much. I actually just came here because I miss it so much. I can see how people would think it was slow moving, or something but I thought it was excellent. The strange thing is, my boyfriend at the time I started watching it, suggested it to me on a recommendation from one of his male friends whose wife got him into watching it. He ended up not even lasting an episode however, and I was hooked. I wish there was more. :)
You just think its dull or the entire premise doesn't interest you?
the entire premise - my wife does watch it and thinks its great
shareImagine her trying to get you to watch the finale with her when you didn't watch any of the show up to that point? This is what I tried to do. That's kind of funny.
shareShe tried - she also loves The Crown. We have totally different preferences when it comes to TV/movies. We're still going strong after 26 years. I watched Passengers with her last weekend and I thought it was pretty good. She says there is still hope for me.
shareI've been meaning to check out the Crown. These shows can kind of feel like a nice big novel to me though, have to be in the right mood to start it. Does that make sense?
You guys sound cute. :) I once asked my boyfriend to let me choose any movie I like for my birthday week, and he had to watch a romance from the 40s. :) All good.
oh and i keep meaning to check out passengers too, its always in the trending or new bar at the top of the page here.
My wife's favorite movie is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - she cries everytime
shareI liked the first season well enough, but rapidly lost interest after that, and I like period pieces.
It didn't have enough depth to hold my interest.
Do you dislike period pieces in general, Brit period pieces specifically, or was it just this show that was like torture to you?
I have no problem with period pieces in fact Poirot and Sherlock Holmes ( with Jeremy Brett) are two of my favorites shows. Also recently watched The Knick which was good.
shareWas DA too slow for you?
I heard The Knick was excellent. Too graphic for me, unfortunately, because otherwise I suspect I'd have liked it.
seems like a soap opera to me.

Can you explain what you mean by that? People use the terms soap opera and jumping the shark freely, and often I don't understand why they're applying them.
It is a small human drama, but that doesn't equate to soap opera to me.
For me the romance angle must be secondary ( or lower) in order to be interested. If romance is primary then I consider it soap opera like. This is why I don't like Star Wars - I consider it a glorified soap opera - Some people think I am crazy but there it is.
Really? What about Casablanca, or The African Queen, or, or or? A lot of greats have a romance angle as a primary topic. It is, after all, a very important aspect of human life.
To me, DA was primarily about the fall of the landed gentry, the consequences it had for everyone in this household, and those that surrounded the area.
Weren't you the person who posted you thought Star Wars was overhyped? That I agree with, but didn't think the romance in it was primary.
When I call something a soap, it doesn't have anything to do with romance. It's bad, hammy acting, with overblown and often absurd dramatic plots. If you can call them plots.
Did you dislike Raiders of the Lost Ark too?
I'm glad I asked, since now I know what you mean by soap opera.
Casablanca I consider a war/espionage movie
African Queen I consider a survival movie
But both were primarily about the romances.
shareI have higher tolerance for romance in movies as opposed to a series. For example I watched the movie Passengers last weekend and I enjoyed it. But I would not watch a series based on the same premise. I hope this clarifies.
shareOkay, your preferences are your preferences. I appreciate your taking the time to explain them.
shareJust to jump in here and agree, The Knick was so wonderfully done. I really enjoyed it. There were a few graphic parts but it was worth it. There was little to no romance in The Knick. God I miss Dr. Thackery.
/rant ;)
Really? Maybe I'd be able to watch The Knick then. I'll see if it's on Netflix.
shareNow I'm nervous of your tolerance level for a show being graphic. haha. It is a medical period piece, but its not done in a way to gross you out for the sake of grossing you out. Does that make sense?
I'm kind of bias though, its one of my fave shows ever. There are also only two seasons which is a shame. Up until us talking about it here I thought they were still doing a 3rd. Luckily it ended so that it doesn't make you feel it didn't have a proper conclusion.
That makes sense, but I don't have a *great deal* of tolerance for blood and guts. Only way to find out if I'm up for it is to watch. Hey, worst that can happen is I end up muttering "It's not real, it's only a TV show. It's not real, it's only a TV show" and turn it off :D
shareTo each their own. I love it.
shareI find it entertaining. It shines a light on circumstances and a time period we don’t often see.
I do agree it’s a bit like a soap. How many times can you use the ‘ol the person overhearing a conversation from around the corner bit.
