Tony Gillingham

Just watched the episode in season 5 where Carson tells Mary that Tony wasn't good enough for her. He says it as if it was obvious all along. How exactly? The writers never gave a clue that I noticed.

It's Carson. He'd say that about the Prince of Wales. If he wasn't sidelined by the palsy, he probably would have said that about Talbot.

I realized that as soon as I posted the question. No one is good enough for Mary in Carson eyes

reply

Yeah but did he say anything negative about Henry? Wouldn't he have to for that "no one is good enough" thing to be true? If it was only against Tony, there must have been some reason (unless bad writing).

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Did he say that about Matthew? I forget. However, Mary marrying Matthew meant that the estate would stay in the family which Carson would be happy about.

Carson indeed complained about Matthew, he complained when first arrived, then he was practically insulting Lavinia when Matthew invited her to the house, there is a scene when he is serving her almost in a rude way (not as rude like when he served Tom) or that Lavinia didnt belong to the landred gentry. He didnt critized Gillingham first because he was titled, something that have weight in Carson, but after they broke up with Mary he tell that he wasnt good enough. I bet if Henry Talbtot didnt end with Mary, Cason would have said something very similar.

With his conservaturism and praising of the Crawleys, Carson was almost pathetic most of the time.
