Mary is a bitch

What she did to Edith was horrible.

I'm always baffled by the naysayers. Mary being a btch is what you like about her, why deny it?

I'm not a huge fan of the Mary character, but she's pretty synonymous with btch, even by her biggest fans.

I agree! She was ok some of the time, but she could be utterly despicable, petty, and just downright horrible. I couldn't stand her.

I never thought I could have so much hate for a fictional character but I HATE and DESPISE Mary. I'm glad Edith finally got her happy ending but I can not stand that Mary got one. If only Edith knew Mary's secrets, Mary should have been brought to ruin and ended up alone, or she should have been cast out on the street spent the rest of her days like the whore she is. Those are the only outcomes that could have satisfied me

Edith was a bitch with the Drewes. She had it coming. Mary has always been a bitch openly, I liked it more than playing the victim card. At least she was an interesting bitch. Edith and her husband are boring as hell...

remuse, I so much agree. Mary was a bitch to people's faces and many times regretted it. Edith somehow always managed to hurt everyone around her while while playing the victim.

I was really sorry when the writers killed off Coras' son in the womb. I would have enjoyed seeing how the spoiled, entitled bitches felt about the son and real heir to Downton. Would Mary have married Matthew?
Since Edith and Sybil never expected to inherit Downton, that leaves only Mary. And Matthew never shows the signs of genius or ambition that take a man in that profession to the top--someone like Mr. Murray.

Mary wanted position and power, hence her attraction to powerful, titled men, and their increasingly improbable attraction to her--which would argue that she saw no other way to those things by her own abilities. Edith fell backwards into her talents and Sybil's altruism would have been fulfilled by a nursing career, and championing Tom's journalism.

Mary from the very start felt she was entitled, simply though her birthright rather than for her quality of character, and obviously, the hatred between Mary and Edith began from the moment Edith was born. You notice that the baby, Sybil, was beloved, really the heart and soul of that family, and when she died, what should have bonded the sisters together more tore them apart. Mary and Edith were total opposites, but in spite of her side comments to Mary about things Mary said or did, Edith never did anything unwarranted, and Mary's abuse of her lead her to mail the letter about what happened that fateful night. There were moments when they seemed to get along, or at least, the acid on their tongues was dormant.

They remind me of the cousins in "The Old Maid" who grow up closely, but fate turns them into enemies, and at the very end, they are seen sitting together, as Edith said, because they are the only ones left who remember Sybil, Granny and those who died early on, and the ties that bind are greater than their old resentments. I'd like to think that a peace between them would happen after the ultimate confrontation, and that perhaps, age would humble Mary a bit. When I first saw the show, I thought Edith was nastier, but my second viewing of season 1 lead me seeing the total opposite knowing what was yet to come. But yes, Mary was a nasty piece of work at times, being really snooty to Cora for her American background, yet unaccepting over the fact that she was part American too!
