Am I wrong in thinking that...

that Downtown Abbey is nothing more than a glorified soap opera?

I need a little help here with my preconceptions...

I usually like shows about the UK and its peoples, but the more I am watching this (I'm at the half of the first season) I can't help but thinking that what I am watching is nothing more than an extremely well made soap opera. The storylines are pretty cheap and the characterizations are poor: the nasty footman, the wise old father, the kind and gentle butler, the stupid daughter etc etc. The only solid point I can find is the acting, which I find perfect.

Am I wrong in my assumptions and should I continue watching this as If I were watching a great television series?

Season 1 is the least "soapy" of the seasons.

The first season comes closest to "great" television, then again I don't know if there is such a thing as "great" television for all programmes have elements of soaps about them.

I think it didn't exactly pretend to be anything more than that. It was very pretty though.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.
