Watched into S2E07, calling it quits

Realized belatedly when the Lord kissed the maid, that for all its luxurious production values and beautiful settings, it's still just a soap opera. Have heard in othar comments, to stick it out and stop with S3E01. Maybe aftar a hiatus will be able to grit teeth and get that farr.

Yes, it is a soap opera with a bit of comedy of manners thrown in for good measure. A high class soap opera but a soap opera nonetheless. As the series progresses, it becomes more and more like a very poorly written fantasy romance novel.

reply

Agreed. Although there are elements of Season 7 that slightly saves the program. But nothing ever captures the magic of the first season. Still watchable just for fun as long as you don't take it too seriously.

A high glitzed soap opera it was, there is no doubt about that. But, what gets me is, how so many people think that the writing was so superb. I was actually going to stop watching after season 4, (when I realized that my favorite character, Lord Grantham, was going nowhere on the show) but, Lord Merton came on the scene, so I continued to watch while he was still on, but, I had the scenes with the other characters on mute. I'm actually kind of glad that the show ended when it did.

I agree. There were many times that I thought the writing was weak. A good writer would take advantage of situations that had dramatic potential. Instead, we didn't see Matthew and Mary's wedding, didn't see Mary being told about Matthew's death and O'Brien just up and evaporates. We don't see Edith giving birth to Marigold and giving her up to the Swiss couple. We don't see her taking her back.

Then there are the factual issues. One that comes to mind is that Mrs. Patmore should have been wearing big, thick glasses after her cataract surgery.

I found it to be more of a "guilty pleasure" for me then a show I would watch for the good stories. It is absolutely a soap opera with higher production values.

And a chance to see some great actors in their prime. Laura Carmichael said it was like attending a master class.

I liked it all the way through the six seasons. I really don't get what people are complaining about.

Intelligence and purity.

If it doesn't work for you or give you any enjoyment then stop watching. I see no need to grit your teeth to watch more just because others praise it. I stopped watching after season 3 and don't regret it at all.

Your loss, bro.

Not really. If he didn't enjoy it then nothing was lost.

Personally, I enjoyed it even though it's not my cup of tea and would never have watched it if my wife didn't want to.
