Do we ever find out why Bates goes to York in Season 4? (SPOILER)

I'm rewatching, and I'm near the end of Season 4, when the odious Mr. Gruen dies. Bates will fall under suspect, of course, because he was out and about in York that day and acting suspicious in every way. (Asking Gruen where he lived. Glowering about Gruen. Asking for the day off and being oblique about why time after time.)

Do we ever find out why he went to York? Maybe I just need to wait and find out, but I don't remember that we do.

reply

He was set to go to London to confront/kill Green, but changed his mind and walked around instead.

Bates doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd give up and walk around instead, but I guess they wanted to make him look suspicious but also not be guilty and that was the best they could come up with.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Imo he does. He and Anna had already been through so much at that point. He knew killing Green would make everything worse for Anna.

He walked around York because he was beside himself with grief and sadness for what Anna had endured and was still enduring.
