Corey had the lighter to activate the sprinklers and alarm the cops. If only they thought if it sooner. lol bummer.

I think the cigarettes and lighter belonged to the janitor guy they killed. Earlier in the movie they asked Corey if he had a lighter and he said no, then after killing the janitor Corey took his coat. That's where they found the lighter.
