One of the WORST Movies I've Ever Seen
SPOILERS
I can say with some confidence that ATM is one of the worst movies streaming on Netflix, and that I've ever seen all the way through. Yes, there are some features that are less competently made, but the fact this starts with the Universal logo means someone thought this script needed sizable money put into it, to the point that it's not even possible to get a so-bad-it's-funny vibe. The bigger they are, the harder they fail. Here are some points to consider.
To start with, the padding on this is insane. It takes 5 minutes before we see any characters. The opening minutes are then re-cut and shown during the closing credits, making for a credits sequent that's 9 min. long. Take away the credits, subtract the 5 min. prolonged intro, you're looking at a movie with a RT of 1:15. Even at that you have the Corey character miraculously revived to waste more time resulting in one of the most padded out features I've seen.
I've never see a movie of this breed where the killer could be more easily escaped. 3 people in a small ATM building, 1 killer outside. When he starts pounding on the back of the building, the two men could have easily bolted in opposite directions. It wouldn't take 5 minutes for help to arrive, so if the killer had any sense at all he would abort as soon as they took off.
There's a lack of screenwriting possibilities for a movie like this taking place today. We all have cellphones. They are always at our sides. The killer needs someone to enter his trap without their cellphone, let alone THREE PEOPLE.
The killer is without motive, despite the setup begging for a motive. There would have been some satisfaction had this guy lost his retirement fund at the hands of some yuppies, and he plotted revenge. It's impossible for the scheme shown here to predict who would be the victims. He's no luring this firm to his ATM trap.
Take all of this into consideration when you're trying to rank film failure. This screenplay didn't deserve a cast with knowns, or any kind of distribution. I've seen movies I think most people would consider worse simply because they couldn't afford to pull of the vision of the director, but they had something to say and attempted to make their point.
