What to take from this

I just finally got around to watching this and really liked it. I literally just finished watching so I'm still trying to wrap my head around it and I am wondering what people think this film was about, because I am not so sure.

Was it about justice and consequences? How every act has a consequence? Like with Julian being part of all the violence but because of sparing Changs daughter he only loses his hands. In a way he is spared. It is also an opposite to what happens earlier in the film with the father of the raped and murdered prostitute being allowed to mete out justice himself by Chang but because of the father allowing his daughter (dialogue hints to even encouraging it) to prostitute (and thereby indirectly causing his daughters murder) the father must accept his own punishment aswell, and his hand is taken. And throughout the film death on one side of the gang war is followed by death on the other side. In the end everything has consequences and everyone must face judgment. The only one who is not judged is Chang himself, who judges all. In a way he personified God for me, someone 'greater' than all others. He never showed any emotion, he just did what he had decided was the right consequence for the actions of the other characters. I know I am rambling a bit by now but thats all I have for now.

All the hints to the abusive relationships within Julians family lead me to believe there are a lot more and different ways of looking at this story and I would like to hear them, so please enlighten me!

Also the longing of Julian for the entertainment girl he never got to touch!

For me it's a psycho-sexual drama. The emasculating, incestuous mother compared to the father of justice.

I've never bought Chang being God although the question do you know who he is was asked in the film so ... who knows. Maybe there is not literal answer as the film is peppered with moments that are happening in Julian's mind.

Ever tried, ever failed?
No matter.
Try again, fail again.
Fail better.
