the wolves' logic

I just wonder what they're trying to do. Not that I'm comparing them to rocket scientists, but they were made to hunt and they are clearly able to communicate enough for that.

Are they trying to keep the men away from their den, or shepherd them to it? I'd argue the latter. They view the men as a source of food (and vice versa when the chance arises). If they wanted to scare them away from the den, they'd circle around them and come from the other way. I figure they're shepherding them because it's easier to let the food transport itself than to transport it. Take into account that only the first few men men who died actually died from the wolves directly. Probably due to the wolves' brief lack of self-control at the sudden surprise arrival of food. Also why they could then control themselves after one of theirs were killed, because they all could've taken the men probably. After that, the men die by other means. One freezes, one is too injured in a fall to move, one gives up, and another drowns. After these instances, they may as well be eaten but for the one in the river.

Probably something I gave too much thought to, but watching it now and it hit me.
