This was why I enjoyed The Grey so much. The main objective was to survive and try to escape, the wolves were the secondary threat.
I love
The Grey but disagree with this; sure, the extreme cold is communicated well but there's little survival measures taken beyond bracing for the next wolf onslaught.
Anyhow, "survival" movies are my bread-and-butter. For jungle-centric ones, check out the following:
The Most Dangerous Game (1932) - The most faithful adaptation of Richard Connell's classic short story about a shipwrecked survivor being pursued by a world-renowned hunter on a deserted island.
The Naked Prey (1966) - Working off the same premise, an English male is forced to flee into the African safari with a tribe of bush people in hot pursuit after his big-game party offends them. This is a truly visceral cinematic experience with several scenes that will sear into your brain forever.
Apocalyto (2006) - Yet another movie with the same impetus, a Mayan tribesman who escapes Aztec bondage flees into the South American jungle to be reunited with his wife and child with his captors relentlessly tailing him. A visually-enthralling epic from director Mel Gibson.
Rescue Dawn (2006) - Based on a true story and starring Christian Bale, a German-American fighter pilot is shot down over Laos and held prisoner by the Viet Cong. After plotting a daring escape he seeks refuge in the dense surrounding jungle, where he is forced to survive until he can be rescued by his fellow countrymen.
