Even though the film's $52 million domestically is close to recovery its $56 million production budget, I guess it won't have the same success as the Valentine's Day back in 2010 when that film made $110 million domestically.
Fool me once? Shame on you. Fool me twice? Shame on me.
Valentine's Day was a shot in the dark and it worked. Not to mention it preyed upon people's traditions. New Year's doesn't hold as much weight as far as the subject matter in both movies are concerned so it flopped.
It also didn't help that Valentine's Day had young top billing actors plastered all over their promos. While New Year's Eve had Sarah Jessica Parker...?
NYE has some younger stars too. I.e., Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, and Jake T. Austin. Of course, I haven't seen Valentine's Day, but the only young stars that come to mind from that one are the Taylors, Swift and Lautner.

Yeah they were in the movie, but most of the promos had Sarah Jessica Parker, Josh Duhamel, and Robert DiNero all over them. While Valentine's Day showcased Jamie Foxx, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, and Taylor Swift.
