In this movie, considering rom-com conventions and the fantasy associated with those conventions a younger actor is required for Reese's part. Reese is OK for the older woman opposite Robert PATTINSON in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, for instance. This movie not so much.

So in other words, you are a slave to what Hollywood tells you? While on average, men are older than women in the relationship, studies have indicated that older female/younger male relationships are on the rise. The average age difference between men and women in relationships in the western world is 2-4 years, so the May-December relationships between older men/younger women Hollywood loves promoting aren't as popular as one might think.
Besides, this isn't Demi and Ashton in regards to an age gap. Reese is only 1 year older than Tom and 4 years older than Chris. I find that more believable than her coupling up with Rob Pattinson.
I don't think she's too old for it, I think she's not at all close to attractive/appealing enough, though. They picked her becuase she's a big rom-com star, forgetting that audinces will be asked to believe that two studs would die over an average-looking, annoying "girl next door."

this kind of ageism is becoming ridiculous! Most stars look a lot younger than their age anyway and considering they are all in their 30's they are more or less evenly matched. WMV I recommend you stick to movies like "Agent Cody Banks" or "Alex Ryder" which seems to be more your speed and leave movies like This Means War to audiences with a less narrow view of life.

It's not as dramatic of an age difference as it was in say, The Green Hornet where you have Cameron Diaz next to her two young potential love interests. (Someone said that the movie made her look like a worn out suitcase, which sadly it did. Diaz is not an unattractive woman, but she was very badly cast in that movie and on any average shoot she looked like she'd spent the previous night partying.) In TGH the two guys just made Diaz look older and way rougher in the face, whereas Witherspoon has a more youthful look and could get away with it a lot better in this film.

The only one who stuck out as being too YOUNG was Chris Pine...but honestly, I think the point was that his character started off as a bit immature anyway.
