"The Commuter" and "Nick of Time" (1995)
Another poster mentioned this before I did, but I wanted to give it some emphasis:
Though "The Commuter" has a lot of "train thrillers" in its past (from The Lady Vanishes to Strangers on a Train to The Incident to both versions of The Taking of Pelham 123), plus one PLANE thriller with Liam Neesom ("Nonstop")....the movie that this may have the most in common with is:
"Nick of Time" (1995) with Johnny Depp(playing "normal" for once) as the hero and Christopher Walken as the villain. "Nick of Time" is set in a Los Angeles high rise hotel.
. In both films, really evil people choose a "regular guy" at random(except in Nick of Time, its REALLY random) and threaten to kill his family if he doesn't kill somebody for them.
That plot worked both times because you really HATE the villains forcing the regular guy to kill, killing others along the way("Its YOUR fault this person died") and threatening the family.
PS. Johnny Depp once said of "Nick of Time" - "that's the one time I played a regular person...and it didn't work."
