The lipstick/labia scene

I remember a scene in this film where Emily's character is told by the other waitress that it is "very important" that her lipstick matches the colour of her labia. Does anyone know if there's a point/message to this scene or was the director just trying to make a weird scene for the sake of it? I get that the girls were being completely objectified etc but "it's very important that the colour of your lipstick matches the exact colour of your labia" seems like a weird way to make that point to me...

I believe they borrowed that from/were inspired by "Histoire d'O". I vaguely remember a passage like that.

there | they're | their
to | too | two
have | of | off
idiots | indolents | illiterates

I recently saw a movie or read somewhere about a similar thing, how women wear red(der) lipstick and men perceive red lips as the aroused vulva.

If there's truth to it, who knows, but I don't think it was so much a random thing as it was simply part of the director's research into the whole situation.

Like the other posters said about research going into that sort of thing is true. But, that's not what the scene is about. The scene demonstrated how seriously she took the situation, and how seriously the other women did.

Also, I suspect this was to arouse the men, who undoubtedly knew how the color was chosen.
