OK, but she's clearly flawed character. You don't have to "respect" or look up to every character in a movie, and I don't think you're SUPPOSED to here.
Not every pretty girl is supremely self-confident. I once had an ex-girlfriend/friend who briefly became a stripper. She was beautiful (I thought anyway), but lacked self-confidence (although I don't think that's true of ALL strippers). There is some truth to a character like this, more so than the conventional Hollywood heroine who has the world by the ass simple because she's beautiful and SHOULD have the world by the ass. There's something very poetic and appealing about "beautiful losers".
Also, it's pretty hard not to have any interest in Emily Browning (especially when she's naked for half the movie). She would have to play the most vapid annoying character imaginable, not just a sad, flawed one.
