Meh.

Watching this film was kind of like eating a bland but not unpleasant sandwich. I was moderately entertained, but not moved. I get the angle they were going for, and it sort of almost works, but they don't quite hit the mark.

Tom and Julia have no chemistry and so it's hard to disassociate them from 'Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts', which makes for a very awkward kiss scene. Both are fine actors and both were cast well for their respective roles, just not together.

The movie was nice enough and reasonably entertaining, but it's clear that it was intended to be very emotionally engaging, and it wasn't at all. You didn't get enough back story for Larry, or see him from his own perspective enough to grow attached to him. His over-dramatic reaction to the kiss was very jarring because it didn't match up with anything else we knew/had seen about him. It just kind of looked like he was having an electric shock.

Julia's character was pretty much entirely unlikeable, yet we're expected to root for her to get a happy ending. It was easy to cheer when her husband got carted off but only because he was a caricature of a dillhole jerk.

As for the scooter gang and other students, they offer hints of interesting personalities, and the film promises opportunities to get to know them, but it never quite delivers. Snippets here, snippets there, a few small laughs, but it's just too patchworked and inconsistent to get the average viewer emotionally vested in them.
I think it may have fared better if they'd had fewer characters and spent more time on exposition.

On another note: was this movie sponsored by Dulux or what? Every wall shown had some designer earthy neutral colour on it!

The mirror... it's broken.
Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.

reply

the scooter gang should play a much larger role in the sequel.

Agreed with everything u said. It's like it tried to be a lot of things.............funny, romantic, a lesson on the economy and housing market during that time, etc etc but fell just short on all of it. Wished it would have been better.

sometimes more is better.
