Is Episodes the best comedy on TV right now ?

Is this the best comedy on TV right now ?
I say yes, and the only thing even close right now is Brooklyn 99.

Episodes has really hit its stride this year, especially the last few episodes.
Matt Leblanc has never been better, though he’s been strong throughout. The difference right now is that Sean and Beverly are finally starting to show their skill. I was familiar with both of them from “Green Wing”, and I always felt they were being underutilized given their obvious skills. Mangan in particular is an amazing talent more than capable of leading a TV series all by himself. And Greig is every bit his equal. Put them together and…wow !
The writing has been sublime. That ultimatum scene in the meeting with Mr. “O-No…” was one of the best I can recall in a long time. One other thing that might be helping this season is the vastly reduced role of Merc. I loved him in Mad About You, but he just isn’t right for the role of a power broker like Merc. The character has always felt cartoonish and not the right fit for the rest of the cast. Carol is as fantastic as ever, and her useless assistants are far in the background, where they belong. Morning is still gorgeous , and her rant with Sean and Beverly last week was priceless. So very well done.
It’s nice to see a team putting in this kind of effort for a TV comedy. The writing and acting have just been so strong. I really think they’re shooting for Emmy’s this year. I hope they get them.

I agree with what you say except the assessment of Merc. I think he is perfectly miscast as this is a black comedy, so having someone who is believable in the role would diminish the effect, IMHO. Obviously, Pauly Shore would be a joke, but Pankow has just the right mixture of charm and schmarm to pull it off. The way the two women were describing his sexual proclivities just perfectly fit what you'd expect from someone who looked like him.

As for other comedies at the moment, I do like Sirens which has solid episodes and also Last Man Standing. As for awards, I'm thinking Silicon Valley will get some nods. Not sure where House of Lies stands, as obviously it has comedic moments, but it is also every bit as much a drama.

I've been a fan of the show from the beginning. I'm really surprised when my friends say they haven't seen it; I think it's great. This season so far has been outstanding. The writers are killing it and I loved tonight's episode at the hospital! Watched it twice tonight and I'm sure I will again later this week. It would be terrific if it could get some well deserved Emmy notice, Silicon Valley too!

Yes. I stopped by to say the same thing. I'd only disagree with you about Merc.
Scenes with Matt's Dad and stepmom were classic, ranking up there where last season's Matt's gentalia discussion, and 1st seasons vomit in the car scene.
Only show on its level is Veep. There's other funny shows, but not in the class of these two.

I think episodes is easily the best comedy on tv right now. LeBlanc is hilarious and every scene he's in is great. Sean and Bev are great. Carol is an absolute gem. She is perfect in every scene.
On the other hand, the background people are okay. I'd much rather see less of them and more of the main cast. Carol's assistants and Morning - I'd be fine to see them once every few episodes. Matt's Dad is good, but too much of him would be, well, too much. Merc is fine. He was much funny as the boss. Pathetic Merc isn't entertaining. The new studio lady got off to a great start, but this lesbian obsessive fling with Carol is awful.

No one knows this show is on. Do they do any publicity??

its definitely up there!

either this, or Brooklyn or Broad City or Parks and Rec (which is still going strong), and when Silicon Valley returns that will be hard to beat!

totally agree about this season! matts money problems, sean and bevs new show, myra being prego, carol & helen - theres barely been a dull moment all season!

and yeah, its weird that such a great show has flown under the radar. i sometimes think im the only one in australia that even knows it exists haha

That's OK. I'm probably the only person in the US to watch the original "Rake" and Upper Middle Bogan. I love having an offensive slur in my verbal arsenal that no one understands. ;-) Comin' Home Baby!

I'm loving Episodes, just season 2 was bad, for me. Season 1, 3 and 4 (so far) are really well written. But I don't know if it is the best comedy on TV right now, there are Louie, IASIP, Parks and Rec, Community, etc. For me, right now, Louie is better, because I like very much of shows politically incorrect, and Louie is very politically incorrect and well written, at the same time, in a way that it's just amazing. But anyway, that's just my taste.

I gotta say, when i heard about Episodes, Matt LeBlanc's series after Friends, I've never thought it would be a really great show. To be honest, I thought the show would be crap. Turns out, it's not.

Annie's pretty young, we try not to sexualize her.

It is certainly one of the funniest shows on TV, but I think It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia blows every other show out of the water right now. And Curb Your Enthusiasm is most likely done, but that also blows Episodes out of the water. But I love Episodes and anyone I recommend the show to also loves it. It is just not many people have ever heard of it.

Also gotta disagree with your Merc comment. I loved the Merc character and wish his role wasn't diminished so much. Either way, just goes to show how diverse and funny this show is that there is a lot funny stuff going on for everybody.

If you mean currently still in production, I'd say it's a close second to `Veep.' `Louie' is in a category all its own.
And I also put `Green Wing' in the same hall of fame as Python or Fawlty Towers. It's a shame that BBC America only ran the first of its two seasons. It's also never been released on Region 1 DVDs, so it remains pretty well unknown in the U.S.

Green Wing is almost too much at times. After a 50 min episode I need to take a nap. Fawlty was similar, as I'd just become so uncomfortable watching Basil dig himself in deeper and deeper. But, both ARE brilliant. "The Germans" is definitely a top-5 all-time episode.

I just located Green Wing season 2 Christmas Special on P2P so I know how my afternoon will be wasted.
