Nearly finished Book #3, 'Perfect'...

Just cannot believe the contrast in these with the show. A lot more adult, for a start, a lot of the 'F' bomb is dropped, and even almost 4 books in I want to punch all of these girls in the throat. Aria is a vacuous, selfish little tramp (pulling a Spencer here and getting with Sean after he and Hanna broke up), then cheating on Sean with Ezra, Emily is a weak, pathetic little wimp who can't stand up for herself, Spencer needs scalping for being a back-stabbing, horrid little whore and Hanna is actually a joke. Why is she still not even really friends with the other three at this point, either? She's like Mona's little lapdog, and is a total bitch to Lucas.

Despite hating the 4 girls with a passion, though, I can't put the books down.

The girls in the books are worse, but i feel it makes the books better. They are the kind of girls who would have to lie so you can understand why they are stuck in the situation they are in. You dont have that with the show, where its stupid that they didnt go to the police in season one back before they had horrible stuff to hide. In the books, their credibility was shot before it began.

the books were meant to be about actual mean girls. they are intended to be vapid, they are meant to be rude, they are meant to be legitimate liars.

I'm convinced its supposed to be satire because of how dumb they also happen to be on top of this, but its hard to say.

Just read up to where Ezra was arrested in his apartment by two cops who found him there in bed with Aria, and then she watches him get taken away and is confronted by her boyfriend, who informs her that he told the police, and then he dumps her for cheating.

I found the whole scene so very satisfying.

The next book is fun

reply

Omg staahhpp. I plan on reading the books someday, and you're making me not want to read them. The characters sound insufferable.

reply

I thought the same thing when I first started reading the books. I've finished book 8 and I think I prefer the books to the show now. They're just so outrageous and fun.

reply

Yeah, oddly enough, despite despising all 4 of the book girls, I still can't stop reading them. Even though Spencer is written as blonde, Emily a redhead and Hanna a brunette, I still picture their TV counterparts when I read them.
