Why do the girls miss Alison so much?

I'm a little more than halfway through the second season right now, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I get she was their friend and all, but damn near every flashback has shown she was a huge bitch.

She made them feel special. She kept things interesting. She knew how to have a good time, so they put up with the bad side of her. While she did do some bad things to them, she also gave them things/opportunities that they otherwise would not have been able to obtain.

She also did small nice things for them every once and a while. Some flashbacks you'll see she does some nice things.

But she didn't do or say anything unless it would also help her in some way. Even when she did nice things for the girls, it wasn't out of the goodness of her heart. It was always done in a way to show them that she had power and control. The way she "helped" Hannah with her weight loss was absolutely sick.

Who says Aria missed Alison...? 
Sorry, my Aria is A heart gets the better of me sometimes.

She made them feel special and made their lives more exciting.

I agree with everyone's posts but wanted to add that death is generally not something most teens have a lot of experience with. When I was in high school, at least 1 person died every year and it was always devastating. But when it was one of MY friends, that was by far the worst thing I'd ever gone through. He wasn't my BEST friend and he certainly wasn't murdered, and it was still so terrible. That was half my lifetime ago and I still catch myself thinking about him sometimes.
I am so fortunate that I still have very little experience with death, but I do know that it is never, ever easy.

~I wish we'd had a laugh but you're just not funny~

The girls explain that Alison made them feel apart of something special (their friend group), and that she could be a great friend when she wanted to be. Without Alison, they wouldn't have each other and wouldn't have certain experiences. Alison stood up for them a lot and helped them all... in her own way...
