Eyebrow Rant

The makeup on this show is absolutely terrible in later seasons. The prom episode was the worst, collectively, but in each episode at least one of the girls looks awful. I know there have been discussions about Aria's eyebrows throughout the show and they've only gotten worse. I just watched 7x08 again and both hers and Hanna's are drawn in all the way to the area around the bridge of their noses. Not only does it look like the beginnings of a full on unibrow, being angled the way they are makes them look like they're either pissed off or thinking too hard. The overall look is very Oscar the Grouch. They also used reddish eyeshadow on Aria which makes it look like she's been crying and very little mascara so her lashes have no hope of matching her brows. These are gorgeous girls, why do they cake so much crap on their faces?! Sigh. Rant over.

I agree about the brows. I am not sure what this obsessio is with thickly filled in brows, aka "Instagram brows." :-/

I'm all for thicker, more natural brows but when I look at Aria the damn things are all I see! And eyebrows are supposed to be in line with your eyes, not all the way to the bridge, to avoid looking like a Neanderthal. What really pushed me over the edge was seeing Hanna with those things. I guess I kind of got used to Aria's after so long but it's like every time I see her they get bigger and bigger. These are pretty girls! The caveman look isn't flattering on anyone. What are they thinking?? Those kinks should be worked out during the screen test.

I think I remember a post from a long time ago that was something like "Arya's eyebrows are AD!" which was pretty hilarious. I'm thankful they haven't gone that route with Spencer's and Emily...yet.

Totally agree. It seems like Aria's eyebrows got bigger and bigger each season, though they never bothered me before season 6. After that they looked awful. For whatever reason they were filled in so dark it just looked unnatural.

I think Spencer is the only one that managed to escape the racoon train. Aria and Hanna's eyebrows have been exaggerated to the point of absurdity and Emily and Alison's overall eye makeup+eyebrows is just awful+immensely caked on. I get it, they're suppose to be older now! Ironically most women I know in their early twenties, meaning they're of the same generation as the Liars, actually used to sport much heavier makeup and eyebrow look in their teens and toned it down to a lighter, more natural look when the reached their twenties, which is the polar opposite of what we see happening on the show.

Alison always looks terrible. I feel bad for the actress. They always make her so orange! And of course, like lots of people have said on this board, the clothes they put her in are the worst.

The foundation work this season has just been a mess. Their faces usually look shiny and greasy or matted and dirty. And the weirdest thing is that this is just something that recently happened. It was like "Okay, everyone has aged 5 years now and has lost their ability to do their makeup in the time warp."
You're right about Alison. The saddest thing is that the actress is incredibly attractive and would look wonderful with light, natural makeup and some size appropriate clothes that are made for someone above a size 2.

Yes to everything you said. I think all the girls are beautiful but they seem to go out of their way to make them unattractive. To me, the only things done well post-time jump is Aria's bob and Spencer's bangs. I know a lot of people disagree but I think Troin rocks those bangs. But hair was never really an issue for the stylists.

Troian's bangs are fine except I can't get it out of my head that it's a wig. The only bad hair style that I've seen on the show was Paige's old coconut haircut but I heard in an interview that it was an old stylist and that the next stylist that took over thought that haircut was awful and that's why it got changed so drastically. And it's true, Aria's bob is tasteful and makes her look older and classier. That along with the clothes that she was wearing when she gave Ali the casserole are probably the best things that have happened to the 7th season style wise.

reply

LMAO that's a wig?!?!?! Wow. I'm SO bad at picking out those things!!! I DID think her hair looked fuller and a little less flyaway more recently but a wig never even crossed my mind. I need to go back and check that out. However, I think maybe my right to criticize stylists should probably be revoked.

The casserole?

Troian's hair after the 5 year jump is probably a wig, a speculation which is supported by the fact that she had no bangs in press photos which were taken during the same time that PLL was being shot http://www.seventeen.com/beauty/hair/news/a34822/troian-bellisario-explained-spencer-hastings-bangs-plus-the-other-pll-hair-transformations/ .

Aria brought Alison a casserole in the 5th episode in the 7th season. I personally love it. It's classy and really works with her figure.
Too bad she had to wear a heinous sweater later (season 7, episode 6), probably to even it out. It reminds me of an LSD trip or something:

Yes, its nice seeing Aria dressed like a normal person every now and then. She does look good there. But then they put her back in the artsy "I'm so unique" crap like that SWEATER. Holy hell that thing is bad.
