It's really nice to finally see some new content, but I can't say that this got me any more excited about 7b. It's less thrilling than I was hoping for.

I also hate how it seems like Ali will now be present constantly as the fifth Liar. I miss getting scenes of just the core four girls and I hope we get some of those, too.

reply

Ali IS a liar and has always been part of the group of 5. It's how they came together in the first place. Alison is not in every episodes of 7B though, so I'm sure you will get some core four moments. But then again, maybe not because Caleb is always around as if he is also one of the liars.

reply

I don't consider Alison a Liar at all. Sure, she brought them together, but they spent four seasons bonding and spending time together without her. Even when she returned in season five, she was around, sure, but for the most part it was the core four Liars until 7a. We haven't seen her build up a real friendship with these girls they way they have with each other. She doesn't even seem to like them most of the time. Her presence, imo, throws the dynamic of the group off completely. I feel the same way about Caleb and the other boyfriends - I miss when they were mostly in the dark about A.

I suppose it just really depends on what criteria you consider when thinking of the Liars. Some people think it applies to anyone who was in the barn "that night." I think it goes beyond that.

Where did you get the information that Ali isn't in every episode of 7b? That didn't seem to be the case from the BTS photos I saw.

reply

It's really not up to me or you to decide. She is considered a liar by the show creator. There is a difference between the core four and the liars. Alison is not part of the core four, but is one of the liars. Marlene put her in the opening credits and always references to the five liars now, so that includes Ali, wheter you like it or not.

There is still a difference between her and the other 4, that's why she is not in every episodes and is sometimes left out of scenes or storylines. She is not in 7x13 for sure, and doesn't appear to be in 7X17. 7x13 was confirmed by Bryan, the writer for that episode on twitter. 7x17 is not confirmed, but people are speculatings based on snaps.

reply

I didn't say that she's not officially a Liar. I said that I don't consider her a Liar, and I don't think she deserves that status, which is why I don't like that she's always included in that bond now. You clearly feel differently and that's fine.

I don't want to completely derail this thread, though. Overall I'm not super thrilled with this promo - it looks like just more of the same. Hopefully the promos that come out closer to the premiere will give us a better sense of what's really to come.

reply

I didn't like the promo either. I wonder if we are going to get more of a trailer like promo closer to the date.

There are suppose to be ships promos in February

reply

I imagine somewhere around February or early March we'll get the full trailer. I expect they'll release a few sneak peeks too, as they usually do.

So I get people don't like Ali but she's been a 'fifth' liar since she returned full time in season five. And if we're being technical she was the fifth liar since the series premiere.

I get just wanting the core four but that shipped has sailed years ago.

I disagree. Maybe I phrased myself poorly.

I understand that Ali has been advertised and referred to as the "fifth Liar" since season five. I don't have a problem with that. My issue is about her actual role in the show.

She spent a few episodes in 5a constantly with the four, but for the most part was seen as shady and untrustworthy. Especially near the end, it was very much her vs. the Liars. In 5b she was in jail - not with them at all. She was mostly apart from them in season six as well, particularly in 6b where I barely recall any scenes with all five of them beyond 6x11. Though she was called the fifth Liar, there was still very much a sense of the "core four."

There has been an undeniable change in her role since she got out of the hospital this past season. I think we may have gotten one scene with just the core four Liars since then - she's constantly present for every conversation, meeting, A message, and adventure. I don't mind her being around some of the time, the way that Mona and the guys are (and even the omnipresence of the boyfriends gets on my nerves), but Alison seems to have become a permanent member of their bonded group in a way that she never was before. It's too late to make that adjustment seem natural to me. She just doesn't share the bond that they have with each other, and that's the fault of the writers' indecisiveness when it comes to her character.

I'll also fully admit that I have a huge bias against Ali. I absolutely cannot stand her, which definitely plays a big role in why I don't like her hanging around all the time, lol.

I fully understand this frustration but I feel like this is more so the piss poor writing of the writers and not necessarily the fault of the character.

but Alison seems to have become a permanent member of their bonded group in a way that she never was before.

I think this is also an issue with writing because as a viewer we're supposed to feel like this is normal because Alison was there as a part of the 'core' before she ended up 'dead' and all this crazy stuff started happening. But we weren't getting enough flashbacks and the flashbacks we did receive Alison was always put in a negative light. So now that when she's with the group it seems very disingenuous and it didn't have to be that way if they told the story more-so from their relationship as friends and not so much as a mystery/combined with shock value stuff.

I'm not the biggest fan of Alison but I get what the writers were trying to achieve...the problem is they did a horrible job at it.

Yes, it's absolutely the fault of bad writing. They should have started integrating Ali into the group in season five, having her interact positively with the Liars, have fun with them, joke around, really bond. But they didn't do that at all. We have so many scenes of the Liars doing things like that with each other (Aria and Hanna setting up a dating profile for Ella, Spencer and Aria laughing about shaving Mr. Hastings' sideburns, the Liars having a moment in the back of the prison van, etc.), but aside from the goodbye scene at the end of 6x10, I can't recall a single scene like that with Alison.

That's why her presence throws the whole dynamic off for me. They act like she's as close with them as they are with each other, but going through trauma and terrible experiences is only part of how they all bonded. They've shared so many lighthearted friendship moments with each other and the writers never tried to include her in that.

reply

My exact thoughts

reply

Yeah they only briefly dealt with it when they were laughing about some tv show and Alison clearly felt left out. Then they just dropped Alison into scenes and didn't deal with the consequences of her return. Alison's basically the Mona of the group while still being Alison. They're loyal to her(to a degree) but they don't really consider her a friend like they do each other. It's almost difficult for me to articulate even when I understand it lol. The writers failed Sasha more than any other actress on the show second would be Lucy. I can't imagine playing a character so confusing and then have her stripped of her agency and personality traits.

This so much! Honestly I think Lucy maybe ahead of Sasha on this one. Lucy has shown that she's a very capable actress but all her storylines have been regulated to stuff with Ezra. It's maddening. Sasha was just a reoccurring character but I think more could've been done with her.

The biggest mistake they made was bringing Alison back from the dead and not knowing what to do with her. Not knowing who she was and how she would fit in the grand scheme of things particularly with the girls. They are doing the same with Mona and it's a travesty.

Ugh it's so frustrating. All of the love interests get more screentime than Mona and it bothers me every season. It's even worse when they hype the fans up and pretend that she's the fifth pll and they don't follow through. I would be more understanding if these other characters had interesting storylines but they don't at all. Aria's the most popular pll and I know fans would love her even more if she had decent storylines. Lucy would get more recognition as an actress especially with those performers of the week articles. Hopefully the lack of attention will help her after the show when it comes to getting roles. She's one of the most consistent actors on the show.

What bothers me, going along with this, is that there are so many combinations of characters that we've never seen. It's been seven seasons and Aria and Toby haven't had one single scene together. I love the dynamics between so many characters but they pass over those opportunities to shove the Liars in with their love interests at every opportunity.

Take 7x01 for example. This would have been the perfect episode to really mix it up and pair characters up who never really interact. I loved Mona and Caleb's scenes because they have such an interesting dynamic that isn't explored very often. Spencer should have been the one to visit Ali, Toby and Aria should have broken into Ali's house, and Emily and Ezra should have been the ones to go to the Lost Woods. It would have been so cool to see all of those different combinations.

But no. Emily goes with Alison, Spencer goes with Toby, and Aria goes with Ezra. As if we don't get enough scenes with those pairings. Yawn.

reply

I agree. I think this is for Lucy's benefit in the long run. It's frustrated because the show could've been even more better if the writing was a little more consistent. And I think the performances from all the actors would've been better.

Nah, Sasha is second. She at least got three to 4 seasons of being an actual character. Lucy has been on the "Ezra show" since season 2.

The world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters.

reply

Definitely, Lucy is number 1 with a bullet of the actresses that have been screwed over.

Am I the only one that feels like this trailer is a bit of a cop out and doesn't really tell us anything? All it did was flash a bunch of text and show really short scenes that might be interpreted in any way. I found the first trailer to be better if only for the line that Aria said "I don't want to lose. I want out!" because for me that really hit a note in regards to the fact that this has been hanging over their head now for a large part of their lives and how traumatizing that must be.

Eww at Caleb. They give him way too much screentime and we get one episode with Mona.

Ever since he came back in season 5 he became more of a fifth liar that nobody asked for.

We're only rotting one episode with Mona in 7B? Since when?

reply

I don't think that's true...? Based on what I saw of BTS from filming, it looks like she's in the majority of 7b.

reply

Sorry I was just exaggerating my issues with past seasons. I hope we see Mona in every episode this time around.

Right I feel like this is the most upsetting thing about 7B.
