I'm rewatching for the millionth time, but did we ever find out why Ian actually committed suicide? Mona put the note in there, but did we ever find out his reasoning? Maybe just thought there was no way he wouldn't be found guilty?
For me it still doesn't make sense that Ian committed suicide. He was a narcissist that only ever thought about saving his own skin. Marlene saying that he committed suicide sounds like an ill planned afterthought.
it was definitely an ill planned afterthought. when ian had killed himself she didnt even know if Mona was going to be -A. she had no idea who was going to be under that hoodie and probably wanted it to be -A at the time considering... you know the hoodie.
then when they decided on Mona they had no idea how NAT fit in so just had ian kill himself to avoid the shame of the videos being released.

Yeah exactly. Ian was the one character who would've and should've faked his death. Ian would've made a better Charles as well just reveal wise. Back to the suicide, it never fit his character and the motivation was weak. I could see him aligning with A or Jenna and Garrett to frame the girls for his death. He had the upper hand the entire time so there was no reason to commit suicide. Everyone already believed his story and assumed the PLLs were lying about everything. It also never made sense for Mona to write a fake suicide note out of A texts. Not only was it unnecessarily cruel for her to pretend to be Ian and have Melissa find his body but why would she involve herself in something messy and potentially blow her cover? She had enough to do as A as it is anyway. But we still have no idea why Garrett pretended to kill Alison for Jenna and of course Ian's nonchalant response to seeing Alison back from the dead when she shoved him off of the bell tower.

I agree that Ian committing suicide was never thought out completely... it seems like there was more they intended to explore there but didn't (we were meant to believe A killed him but then fans ended up loving Mona, so idk if that changed the writers reasoning).
But if you think about it, Ian had just confessed a ton of terrible things to Spencer and was intending to kill her. His plan didn't work out and if he survived the fall, he would've probably faced jail time, a broken marriage with Melissa and her not allowing him to see his child, etc. So basically he probably felt suicide was his only option as his life was basically over after the PLLs heard him saying he was going to kill Spencer and whatnot.
It's also before the show decided everyone has fake identities and can fake their deaths with ease too. If Ian popped up in season 4 then he definitely would've faked his death. He could've just changed his name and moved somewhere else.

To me, Ian presented himself more as the kind of guy who would fake his own death, get a fake ID and start a life somewhere else. Committing suicide, for the reasons that happened on the show just seem out of character to him. He was a guy that was ready to kill Spencer to cover his tracks and save his own skin. Faking his own death and running off also seems like something he was totally capable off. Ian is one of the few characters I would have loved seeing back from the dead (assuming that the last we would have seen of him was when he disappears from the clock tower).
