OT - What shows or movies helped you with depression?

It's more common to use binge-watching TV shows or watching lots of movies as a way to cope with depression or escape reality, but was there ever a show or movie (or multiple) that actually helped you with existing depression? As in, not just used for comfort or to get through it, but helped you feel energized and gave you a desire to make changes?

My goodness, I was just thinking of this not too long ago. One show would be the new show Speechless, it's about a wheelchair bound, mute teen named JJ who is just trying to live a normal life and be independent. All the characters including JJ and his family are so funny. It really distracts me from depression and it's also something that I can relate to because I also have cerebral palsy, though not as severe as JJ. And he's played by someone who actually has cerebral palsy, so it feels good to finally be represented in the media. I can't think of other shows for I have too much on my mind at the moment, but I'll add more once I clear my head.

because depression is such a personal issue, the cure tends to be rather personal as well.

Buffy helped me a lot because of how inspiring it could be. a lot of hardship, especially in later seasons, but a focus on growth and over coming through your own. the relationships are all flawed and all end, unlike a lot of shows whih try to end with characters ending up together. while still doing justice to those relationships. when you dive into the metaphor it becomes more beautiful and more inspiring.

Steven universe really gets me pumped as well. its a cartoon but its got a strong focus on relationships and personal grwoth, the idea that even if you're the worst person in the group you still bring something to the table, it has such a strong focus on teaching that you dont have to be the best or even that good. you're great because of who you are not what you do. just typing this makes me feel happy. the first 26 episodes are a bit rough cuz itsj ust establishing the lore of the universe (episodes are 11 minutes long) but after thati t really begins to build into something truly beautiful.

Any film by Hayao Miyazaki. All his films are just magic.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I have some similarities with the main character and I really relate to seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5 for personal reasons. The show makes me feel like I have a lot more to do than I realize and that hope is never truly lost even when bad things seem to happen one after another. We all have a purpose and we can all achieve inner peace.

I used to use Forrest Gump and American Beauty when I was younger to cheer myself up but I think that the one single series that got me through a very bad bout of depression was Six Feet Under. I was going through some very tough times and I completely isolated myself but luckily I came across Six Feet Under at the same time. I binge watched the entire series in about a month and just got completely sucked into the stories and struggles that the characters were going through.
Two of my favorite quotes that I have tried to keep in mind is Brenda's "The future is just a *beep* concept that we use to avoid living today." and the conversation that David's father and David have about him holding onto his pain like it means something because I think that a lot of people including myself have found themselves guilty of doing exactly that at some point. It's just so easy to be miserable, to hold onto pain and misery like they make you special or worse like you'll get your revenge someday. And the only thing that it does is waste your life away.
"Well, what am I supposed to do?"
"What do you think? You can do *anything*, you lucky bastard - you're alive! What's a little pain compared to that?"

One Tree Hill. There was something so inspiring and uplifting about it. I still rewatch it when I'm feeling down.

Also the original Beverly Hills 90210. Lots of exploration of various struggles and how to cope.
