I maybe reaching plus Mona does have a mental illness and Ali did say it was hard to tell Hanna and Alison apart from each other almost as if they were twins.
But anyways back to the title question, do you think Mona befriended Hanna because she looked similar to Alison? I mean Mona really wanted to befriend Alison.
She even gave Ali a makeover and turned her into an Alison clone.
Yes Mona was obsessed with Alison and wanted to recreate her friendship circle. I always found it interesting to watch Mona be so determined to stay in the beta position. She was too weak and insecure to even envision herself as the leader and immediately latched onto Hanna because 1. she looked similar to Alison 2. she was in the original PLL circle that Mona is obsessed with and 3. she was the easiest to manipulate and mold. They should've done more with this storyline when they showed the flashback and Hanna confronts her. Things get resolved pretty quickly but they didn't properly deal with the betrayal that Hanna dealt with in that moment. Like a few others it's part of the reason I wanted Mona to die. She has this expression when she sees the PLLs together and it's a moment of clarity that she won't ever be apart of the group even when she schemes, lies, and manipulates her way into the room. Her dynamic with the PLLs is interesting to watch especially with Spencer(her good twin) and Alison(creator of Dark Mona).

this. Mona's 'final arc' in 5A was one of the few well executed plots there is, it was time for her to take her bow.

Yeah they explained this in season 5 when Ali returned and Hanna went through a dark phase. Hanna went through an identity crisis because Mona had pushed her into being an Ali clone. This leads to Hanna dressing darker and putting black in her hair to distance herself from Ali and to be her opposite.
