Why did the "New York minute" text scare Alison into lying in 5x02?

I've always disliked how Alison made up that kidnapping story without consulting her friends right when she returned, but have always begrudgingly accepted that she did it because that fake A text scared her into it.

But I was thinking about this incident tonight and realized something. Why was Alison so freaked out by it, whether she thought it was from A or someone else? "The truth will bury you in a New York minute." It doesn't make any sense that she lied to protect Aria from A blabbing about Shana. The whole point of going into the police station was so they could finally confess the entire truth, starting with the Jenna Thing and ending with New York. Aria even says moments before that what happened to Shana "happened because of me. And I can handle that part."

So what could A, or whoever she thought sent that text, have done? It wasn't like anyone could hold any secrets, about New York or anything else, over their heads anymore. I don't understand why Alison would be scared into lying by that. Who cares if anyone else knows? The truth was about to come out anyway.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Does anyone else have an explanation for this? Like maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of the text or something?

I don't think any of us can shed any light on Alison's behavior because she was written so inconsistently and I don't believe anyone who writes/produces the show offered any extra information. Maybe it's one of the twists or puzzle pieces that we will find out in 7B but I have the same question as you. I simply don't get it.

I'm glad it's not just me then! And I too hope that the inconsistencies of her behavior are explained, but in a way that doesn't try and just blindly excuse everything that she did. We need to know what she was really up to in a lot of 5a.

Agreed. There's a disconnect on the show. The writers don't consider our complaints valid because they label inconsistencies as random or unnatural character growth. I remember Sasha thinking that Alison was A because of her behavior in 5A. They really didn't think bringing Alison back would require explanations but 5A made her seem bipolar and especially untrustworthy only for it to be swept under the rug. I'm torn because I know the explanation if we get one will be absolutely awful but then I also want to know.
