OT: what do you waste your money on?

What do you waste your money on that oyu dont really need?

I find that most of my 'spending' money goes to eating out. i used to not care for eating out but lately I love it far more than eating in, id eat out every night if i could tbh. mostly asian foods. i try replicating the recipes at home but with little success.

ive also wasted a lot of money buying original paintings this year. i found an artist who does the creepiest stuff, and he tends to give me a lot of free items with each legit purchase i make. i have so many paintings of the artist screaming in my apartment its ridiculous.

what do you find yourself spending money on that you think you shouldnt?

Kindle books. This one is easiest because you just buy with one freakin click right from your Kindle. Especially when its in a series. Like if you are in book 1 of a series and you finish it "buy book 2" shows up. How am I supposed to turn that down?

Candy. So much candy. Like "a grown adult should never eat that much candy" amount of candy.

We order pizza once a week so I guess that lol.

I know that feel all too well, though i dont spend i just manage to get my hands on it. my mom likes to send me a giant box of resses candy every october and i just put it in ym freezer and manage to eat it all before halloween.

then i go trick r treatin cuz obviously free candy trumps being an adult any time

I buy it. It's always around. Especially this time of year. Boom, Halloween, boom Christmas candy, boom, valentine candy, boom, Easter candy.

CAN'T ESCAPE.

I have a giant bag of it in my pantry. I filled one of the huge ones I got from Universal with all my stash. Chocolate, fruity, gummy, sour, I got it all.

Books. I'm a full time student so I end up reading on breaks or whenever I have free time but it can be limited so I end up getting books that I won't have time to read for a good while. I guess that's not really wasting money but it can be a bit annoying especially when I run out of shelf space.

im noticing a theme here. reminds me of this funny post i read where someone said something along the lines of
>go to the store and buy 10 new books
>Even though I still have 70 unreadbooks
>and no shelf space at home
>end up just re-reading harry potter again

LOL. I was going to say the same. Although in the recent months I've been much, much better about not buying books since I have so many new ones at home unread, and because new books cost a lot of money. I guess I wouldn't consider it a waste of money because books and reading are so wonderful, but it's definitely unnecessary spending. Do you frequent used or new bookstores, or both?

Also, Starbucks. When I was in college it was so bad, there was a cafe on campus and in the library and I would sometimes get two or three lattes a day! Besides the obvious expense, it's a lot of sugar and milk, ugh.

I still probably spend more than I should on Starbucks, but I've cut it down to 3- times a week. Naturally, there's a huge Barnes and Noble (complete with Starbucks cafe) right next to my work! I spend so much time there but I have to say I am proud of how much self-control I've developed. I can get a coffee and walk around just looking at books but leave without having made a purchase.

reply

Mostly Barnes and Noble. I want to buy a lot of them on Amazon but I take advantage of the sites that put books online in PDF form too. It's really helpful this year because I'm doing a book challenge and it makes things a bit easier. Starbucks is amazing so I can relate.

Has your Barnes and Nobles changed? A few years ago, my local B and N has changed. The front fourth to half of the store now sells toys.

I spend a lot of money on board games. I don't really need them but they bring me a lot of entertainment (calculating economy wise it's cheaper than going to the movies because I spend way more time playing each board game).

But one really pointless thing I spend a lot of money on that I don't need and serves no real point: Diet soda. I've loved diet soda since I was a teenager and I can easily drink up to a liter in one sitting. I prefer the taste over regular soda and I really love it when they have "American days" at the supermarket because then they sell 33cl bottles of all this strange sugar free soda like Coca Cola Zero Cherry, Pepsi Max Cappucino and Vanilla Coke. I'm trying to cut down on it and drinking mineral water instead, more for my wallet than for my health really.

what board games we talking here?

lords of water deep? manhattan project? cosmic encounterS? star realms?

Arkham Horror (I currently have 2 large expansions and 2 small expansions), Firefly, Talisman, Dead of Winter and I used to play Catan but I have fallen out some.

reply

oh god i loved arkham horror, that game takes for ever. i remember my friend had it and i really wanted to play so i had to convince him to have like this giant game day, which ended up turning to a game weekend. those were the days.

I have gone with my SO to a cabin in the countryside with Arkham and all of the expansions and over the course of the weekend played ALL of them. That's my version of a relaxing weekend.

reply

by the end of just one of those i was burnt out, we had to set up this system of 'pallette cleanser' games to refresh our brains

Conventions are definitely a waste of money. I go to 4 anime conventions a year and probably spend like 2k between them.

Books-I do know a site that has books for free or cheap as all get out.

What site is this? I wonder if you're referring to Paperback Swap. I used to use that site all the time.

reply

Nope, this site is called bookbub.com You have to have an amazon account and a kindle. What you do is you register and put what genre's of books you like. Then you'll get a daily e-mail with free books and/or cheap as all get out. Also, if you have an amazon kindle account, build up your wish list. Then click the drop down bar so you see "items with price drop". Again, you can get books really cheap or free. :O) Free is good.

Honestly any kind really. I was doing well with cooking at home but then the holidays hit and I need to get back on track.

I would love to see your recipe for Chipotle at home because I'm thinking I could replicate it with tweaks here and there. I really need to stop eating out so much. It's not healthy.

depends where you eat, but yeah. chipotle is about as high calorie as any home veersion would be, and its all pretty fresh ingredients, but for me its expensive cuz i always get a 13 dollar mega burrito.

the home recipe is pretty simple, all the ingredients are the same, make sure you dont cut corners by just having tomato, you gotta get pico de gallo from the store (or make your own).

the key ingredient is the meat marinade though, you need to buy a can of embassa peppers soaked in adobo sauce. empty the can into your blender and blend it. then you just marinate the meat in it for a couple of hours (or over night if thats what you're into). than cook, and strain.

according to someone who works there they legit just use embassa brand canned peppers in chipotle sauce and it tastes the same to me. to save calories ill just marnate some beans in that sometimes.

the rest of the ignredients are what you see there. pick your favorite beans, rice, sour cream, guac etc.
