OT: Would you honestly compare La La Land to...

2001: A Space Odyssey? As in if you were asked to choose which of the two movies are better or have the better director?

Because that’s a question one user person decided to ask on Film General. And I had to get involved in a pointless argument over this question with another user...lol.

i havent seen 2001 so i cant say. i think its wierd that people are making exact comparisons ever. if asked i could see why people would prefer one or the other, its not even a matter of tastes in the films themselves so much as what kind of story and scope you prefer.

but the fact that people are comparing the two is interesting to me, weird really, because of how different (i think) they are.

It is honestly a bizarre comparison. I mean, I get that they're both acclaimed movies made by acclaimed directors. But that's where the similarities stop. That kind of comparison wasn't even about films of the same genre, let alone acclaimed films release around the same period (a 1968 film vs a 2016 one). Even if you do ignore the eras these movies were made in, it doesn't change the fact that there's a random comparison being made about a romantic musical and a sci-fi journey. A "La La Land vs Singin in the Rain" comparison would've been a little more sound when it comes down to that. One wouldn't really try to compare Timberlake to Mozart or Marvel to Punch magazine, right?

I think that poster was trying to ask which movie do you think is better, and whether that movie subsequently makes one director better than the other. Some other replies were a little confused about the latter being the case (Chazelle vs Kubrick). He wasn't very clear about it either, and admit to be joking with that post. It's not that comparing any movies or art form was bad, it was the illogicality behind it.

its a hugely weird comparrison even to those not entirely sure of 2001s story. just weird in general.

art is hard to compare as a whole really. comparing PLL to Scream makes sense because they have similar work, but its like they'd be comparing PLL to entourage. no comparrison
