Stay-at-home WIFE?!

I'm very familiar with the terms "stay-at-home mom" and "stay-at-home dad," but I've NEVER heard "stay-at-home wife" until now! Rachel, who is 27, is a stay-at-home wife. WTF? What does that even mean? She's married...and that's it? So she doesn't work, even though at her age she ought to be working in a career--and not being dependent on a husband to provide for her financial future. I just don't get it. This isn't the '50s, and for ANY person, regardless of gender, to be a stay-at-home spouse [without children] just seems weird. ๎€“

I thought the same thing!! I've never heard that term before either. I envision her pulling a Peg Bundy, sitting on the couch all day, eating Bon-Bons whilst watching her stories.

I'm glad I'm not alone! ๎€น

But at least Peg had children! (Not that she was winning any "parent of the year" awards or anything, but still.)

Maybe someone thought "stay-at-home wife" was better than "unemployed."

I don't trust people who don't like pets and I don't trust people who pets don't like.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that.

The term used to simply be "house wife" and wives often didnt work outside the home prior to the 70's. Maybe she has a wealthy husband who is old-fashioned and wants his wife to stay at home? What surprised me was that as a "house wife" who is home all day, she should know how to cook. There's no friggin excuse for her. She has plentry of time to take a cooking course, read books, abd watch cooking shows. She must be very lazy to not have learned how to cook by now.

I have a niece who would be considered a stay at home wife. She's in her 40s and never really held a job for longer than a year. So she married this nice guy who works long hours. She doesn't cook or know how to cook so she and husband eat at her parents' house often. Now that I think of it she is very much like Rachel.

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

Maybe she's just unemployed at the moment. I can't believe in 2016 that a woman wouldn't realize the necessity of having some kind of job skills and employment history. What if he loses his job, dies, they get divorced, he becomes disabled? I've worked my entire life, married or single. I can't even imagine not being able to support myself or having my own earned income when I was married. The thought of relying on another person financially creeps me out.

Perhaps--but if that's the case, I wonder how they came up with "stay-at-home wife" as her description. ๎€“

Me too! I always worked, with some breaks here and there for things like [complicated] pregnancy, staying at home temporarily after giving birth, and assorted illnesses. But if you look at my Social Security earnings/work history, it's very well populated from the time I was 17 until I became permanently disabled at 48.

We raised our daughter with a super-strong work ethic, and the understanding that she needs to be responsible for HERSELF in terms of money. If she ended up marrying someone who ALSO makes a nice income, great, but that should not be her sole objective in life. (She's happily married to a great guy, they're both earning nice money, and they're very well set in case something unexpected happens.)

I bet she's a stereotypical "Southern Belle." She was probably raised that way.

I am a hard core feminist. That means I believe every woman should be able to choose the life they want. So if a woman decides to be a stay at home wife, and it's her choice, then you go girl.

That sounds wonderful in theory, but what about when a woman has no job skills and then finds herself divorced or widowed? If you're truly a feminist, like I am, it seems like you'd want women to be on equal footing with men, and that includes having marketable job skills so they can support themselves if need be. You're aware, aren't you, that ~50% of marriages end in divorce [in the US]? To say nothing of people dying, even very prematurely; that happens all the time due to illness, accidents, murder, etc.

So if a woman decides to be a stay at home wife, and it's her choice, then you go girl.
Believe it or not, considering what I just wrote!, I actually agree with you. It's not *MY* place to say what anyone should/shouldn't do with their lives. If a woman, or man, chooses to sit on their butts during the time period when they should be getting established in a career, that's their business. However, my original point in this thread was curiosity as to what a "stay-at-home wife" is! Like I said, I'm familiar with stay-at-home moms and stay-at-home dads, but I've NEVER heard the term "stay-at-home wife" before. A wife isn't a job title, nor does it describe a person's duties (like 'mom' or 'dad' does). A wife is a title one gets when married to a husband. So what does a stay-at-home WIFE do?! ๎€“

The same thing a "housewife" does...it's just not PC to say "housewife" anymore.

According to Food Networks website she recently relocated to Tampa. So yes maybe shes unemployed because she hadn't found a new job yet or maybe she doesn't need to work. Maybe she's an Military Wife and doesn't work because they move around a lot.

Just because she's infinitely more attractive then you doesn't mean you need to dump all over her ๐Ÿ˜จ

Perhaps, but everyone I know who's been married to a military person found a job within a short time of their last move.

Well, at least I have the consolation of knowing that I'm infinitely more intelligent *THAN* you! (You might want to learn the difference between "then" and "than"--which I think I learned in Kindergarten or first grade.)
