all these haters

It really depresses me seeing all the people who were unhappy with this film. In my opinion it is a modern masterpiece. The performances, the score, the cinematography, all were so superb. There's a level of quality and richness you just don't see too often anymore. Freddie Quell is one of the best, most heartbreaking characters I've ever witnessed. It's like he jumps right off the screen.

Absolutely.

Don't feel depressed by people with bad taste.

Feel sorry for them, that they can't be touched by art at this deep level.

It bums me out too, but:
- by the time someone calls this movie "weird and boring" (which I've seen several times here) you usually know who you're dealing with
- some people want nothing but two tons of entertainment and escapism from every movie they see; if they get anything else, the movie "sucks"
- some people are going to hear that it's "kinda about scientology" and not understand why it's not fully about scientology
- so, so, so many people want a movie to have Screenwriting 101 themes and plot, and when it doesn't, it 'sucks' and they didn't make it right.
- there's poetry in it that some people either aren't going to see or get, and if you explain it, it'll break the spell for them anyway. There are images and details and turning points that certainly make the movie about psychologically overwhelming things and a lot of people are going to deflect that as hard as they can. Slice the movie way up any way you like, and it's still going to be about mortality, serious psychological trauma, and loneliness. Most of his other movies have done something like this in a cuter, more palatable package.

If you want to start a thread about how great this is, or what it's about, I'm down. I didn't really see one yet.

Let's just ignore the trolls.

It's my favorite of the past few years. Haven't paid any attention to haters. Why care?

I agree with you on all of this. The acting is brilliant. The look of the film is beautiful. However, for me the story is flawed. IMO the story didn't flow. That would be my only critique of this film.

Now we can handle this like gentleman or we can get into some old gangster sh*t

This is a modern masterpiece. As you say they are so so rare. All the actors are superb. The poignancy that Hoffman is no longer with us is made even more stark by this sublime performance. And Phoenix is perfect.

Simply wonderful.

Horrible movie with great acting. Nuff said. (And I like his others..minus There Will be Blood)

(And I like his others..minus There Will be Blood)

Lol. You know someone's opinion doesn't matter when they don't like There Will Be Blood.

reply

massive douche. You must be related to PTA.

reply

Well...to single out There Will Be Blood as some kind of low point in Anderson's career...tough to leave that one alone.

But yeah, I'm another one of those people who can't believe that a human being could sit through a totally unique and bewitching experience like The Master and call it "boring" or "pointless" or whatever. Just strikes me as odd.
