It bums me out too, but:
- by the time someone calls this movie "weird and boring" (which I've seen several times here) you usually know who you're dealing with
- some people want nothing but two tons of entertainment and escapism from every movie they see; if they get anything else, the movie "sucks"
- some people are going to hear that it's "kinda about scientology" and not understand why it's not fully about scientology
- so, so, so many people want a movie to have Screenwriting 101 themes and plot, and when it doesn't, it 'sucks' and they didn't make it right.
- there's poetry in it that some people either aren't going to see or get, and if you explain it, it'll break the spell for them anyway. There are images and details and turning points that certainly make the movie about psychologically overwhelming things and a lot of people are going to deflect that as hard as they can. Slice the movie way up any way you like, and it's still going to be about mortality, serious psychological trauma, and loneliness. Most of his other movies have done something like this in a cuter, more palatable package.
If you want to start a thread about how great this is, or what it's about, I'm down. I didn't really see one yet.
Let's just ignore the trolls.
