Woah. Joaquin Phoenix

I have never really liked or remembered much he's been in, but holy, he did good in this. The characterization of this drunk, id-ego messed up dude really came through, frame and the posture, he was wonderful.
PSH too. Their scenes together were really exciting.

Said it once and I'll say it again, Freddie Quell is Phoenix's best peformance. In my opinion he was robbed the oscar.

reply

Definitely one of the grittiest, best performances I've seen for some time as well... but he was up against Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln so was a tough one to win.

IMHO, Joaquin's performance in The Master is the best acting done in any film of the past 5 years. Still blows my mind. Talk about disappearing into a demanding role like no other.

reply

I agree. The physicality of Phoenix's performance was remarkable. It must have been exhausting work.

A little on-set story I read: apparently Joaquin's back was in pain every night from having to sport Freddie's crooked posture all day.

I'm just surprised Joaquin didn't break any bones from some of the stunts he pulled, such as the legendary prison scene where he slams his head and back against the steel bedding frame and shatters a real toilet to smithereens with an unpracticed kick.

reply

Yes he was so good in the movie probably his best performance IMO.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Agreed, he really shone again. However it's hard to say that he was better in this than he was in Gladiator, as Emperor Commodus. That performance was terrifying, could not have been better. How he didn't win an Oscar is beyond me. He's an amazing actor!

Lets face it, what hasn't he been good in? He's good plain & simple & his performances range is from good to darn near perfect.
