watched it again
still my favorite film
shareOne of mine, too. Just seen Inherent Vice (twice) and at the moment I prefer The Master, but I've seen that six times so I'm sure IV will grow on me because I had such a wonderful time watching it. PTA is one of those directors whose work becomes more intriguing with every viewing. He entertains me and challenges me to think about what's happening on screen.
shareI respect that you like it so much, but I find it long winded. I do admire dramas that focus on the psyches of a few people. I much prefer these in general to Sci Fi or big budget CGI blockbusters. But this one was just a little too slow for me. Too many obscure scenes, i.e. "Walk to the wall, now to the window….do it again all day". "Pick a point and ride to it….it's a game….woo hoo…he's going a little fast." A little tough to not think about everything else I could be doing while watching this film.
I find the most ironic part was when Amy Adams' character says to Phoenix's character, Freddy, "You just can't get through this life straight, can you?", when in fact that line could have been directed literally to the other actor in the room in real life. Such a shame we lost Phillip Seymour Hoffman for that very reason. For me it's a little weird to think that a mere two decades separate this film from Scent Of A Woman, where Hoffman plays a junior in high school. In twenty years, the poor guy looked to have aged about forty.
