Good Directors Always Make Films Like This

They have a hit early in their career, they have another one. By this time the studios trust them, hand them a huge budget to make that pretentious "I'm so good-that-I-could-do-whatever-i-want," screw up film. Just like M. Night Shamalan's "Lady In The Water". Spielberg's "A.I" and etc.

The difference is that the only reason he had a (very modest) "hit" in his early career was due to the fact that he was able to rip-off Scorsese and lift the dramatic arc and aesthetic style of Goodfellas wholesale without anyone calling him on it (probably due to the fact that his adolescent fan base prefers stories about porn more than the mafia). Then of course he went on to rip-off Altman by mimicking Nashville and Short Cuts (and again, his fan base either didn't care or wasn't even aware of those genuinely groundbreaking films).

And There Will Be Blood was nothing but a rip off of Treasure of the Sierra Madre, right?

~ That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.

Oh for the love of Satan

Influences and "Rip Offs" are completely different... Between you and the OP, im not sure which is more ridiculous. Well, I'd say you... By a long shot

reply

Spielberg's A.I? Are you really comparing the 2? Spielberg has pretty much had complete control since Jaws, wtf are you talking about?

reply

Spielberg's "A.I"

You know it was Kubricks "A.I.", right? Spielberg followed every note Kubrick shared with him at the time. Besides, it's a solid movie.

Do I have to give it to you?

reply

Well then, Kubrick should have done it. Because Spielberg turned it into a pretentious, load of crap.

reply

Kubrick didn't want to do it and in fact wanted Spielberg to do it because according to Stanley, it fits with Steven's sensibilities.

Do I have to give it to you?

reply

Kubrick was also dead.
