Phoenix's performance- similar to Montgomery Clift?

Has anyone else seen Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)? A few reviews of The Master compared Phoenix's acting style as Freddie Quell to Montgomery Clift's role as Rudolph Petersen.

I think that the intensity and performance styles were similar, but I was just curious if anyone else thought so.

I thought, and indeed, keep thinking of punching a *beep* dolphin

The whole time I was watching Joaquin in this, I couldn't get Montgomery Clift's performance in 'Judgement at Nuremberg' out of my mind. I thought it was just me, didn't realise that others had already made the comparison! Phenomenal performances from both actors though.

I definitely agree. Phoenix shares a natural acting style reminiscent of Clift's. Both actors have played tortured characters in their respective careers. One thing worth mentioning is Phoneix looked almost identical to Clift physically in the Master (mostly due to the weight he lost for the role). Compare his look to Clift's first scene in "A Place in the Sun." They resemble each other pretty well.
