were they so afraid of pissing off the Scientologists

This is so vague about the cause. We never really get a sense of what they do, what they believe, how they operate, r they good or bad. Phonix was good and so was Hoffman but outside of two good performances there is not much else going on. It's a good looking film but there is not much else there. So I'm wondering were they so afraid of pissing off the Scientologists. That they didn't what to say anything about the cause good or bad

The Master explores why new religious movements like Scientology were so popular during the post-war era. That's the best way to approach the film. If you're looking for an expose then perhaps the upcoming HBO documentary Going Clear will be more to your liking.

I think there's been a rape up there!

If it were an outright negative "spoof" of Scientology, it would be a lame movie. Also, Scientology IS vague and unclear

Goofy_E said it correctly, it's not so much about Scientology although one can easily draw comparisons, as it is about the torn American psyche ala Freddie. There were many post-war movements, looking to explain the horrors of a war that the world had never seen. People questioned everything, esp. God. That's how I looked at it anyway...
