Phenix was incredibly hard to understand

Joaquin Phenix is a phenomenal actor, and he delivered an undoubtably fantastic performance here. But was I the only one who found him a bit difficult to understand at times..? He mumbled a lot, I must say. I actually had to turn on the subtitles to pick up everything he said. I'm sure his mumbling could be an intentional choice, as it really fit the character, but still.

Totally agree. Really didn't like the film - but if I watched it again, I would hope there is "Closed Caption" available to decipher his mumblings.

Actually, I didn't, which is strange, now that you mention it. I think I was so tuned into him, emotionally, that I heard everything.

I always use CC when I watch films so I didn't really notice.

I do too. Lots of actors mumble their lines. I guess they're doing their best Brando.

He got his jaw wired, but could hardly speak. He said he had the wires cut but left the metal in place to remind him to clench one side of his face. That's dedication. Freddy looked as though he was grimacing in pain.
With all the concoctions he drank, I think it was appropriate that his speech was difficult to understand unless one listened closely.
