Spoiler Discussion: Was the "treasure" the Boy found actually the loot?

I suspected that when the boy got excited and found the "loot" and hid it (and for some reason didn't immediately tell his dad) that it wasn't actually the loot.

I assumed the father was a fairly serious criminal who robbed banks or other major businesses. The boy counted out $860 (and said i'm rich). This movie takes place in the 1980's but clearly anyone who's not a child knows thats not a lot of money. It wouldn't even make a petty criminal reconsider quitting or leaving there former life behind. They'd have to do that on there own for another reason (in this movies case the reunification with his son).

So are we as the viewer supposed to assume that this was what the father was looking for? This was the major loot?
I assumed no but, if im wrong what would change in his life if he had found it?

The boy spend $5 on candy (860/5=168). I'm sure the boy can't do math but that's a years worth of candy. I have no idea what the father would have spent it on but the gifts he gave to his kids (including a new tv and microwave could have easily exceeded this amount)

So I can't imagine the father to have given much weight to finding this AT ALL.

I assume if it was the "lot" he just stashed it when escaping from police to avoid arrest. If he had succeeded at that moment this extra stollen money wouldn't have mattered to him. He'd just go back to steeling.

I'd like to hear anyone's input on this
