It sounds like, throughout this movie, they are calling each other "egg" as a derogatory term. What am I missing? Was this a common insult in New Zealand in the 80s? What does it mean?

yeh its a kiwi (new Zealand) term, still used today, it does not mean to cause much harm, you would say this when someones is acting like a dumbass, clown or an idiot.

Everyone calling one another eggs all the time was the funniest thing about this film.

I visited New Zealand a short while after watching Boy and was disappointed that I was not called an egg once.
