The Night of the Hunter
I think Taika Waititi has seen it at least four to ten times :-)

Sorry, but that just sounds like hater talk to me. Comparing everything Waititi does to "Napoleon Dynamite" only shows your own lack of perspective.
My observation of the influence of "The Night of the Hunter" on this movie was in no way disdainful or anything.

I'm not sure how using the term "hater talk" classifies as "teenager lingo", but then again English is not my first language.
Why else would you impose your constructive and well informed "Napoleon Dynamite" comparison/opinion/criticism in this "The Night of the Hunter" thread?
I think if you’d seen more films you probably wouldn't make that comparison in the first place.
Pretty much any deadpan humour movie about antisocial screwball nerds gets compared to "Napoleon Dynamite" these days. Is it because it was the first "blockbuster" of this kind?
Anyway, are you sure you were talking about "Boy"?
Have you even seen "The Night of the Hunter"?
What are you doing in this thread again?
This is the internet. If a guy wants to mention Napoleon Dynamite then so be it. Don't get all arrogant and dismissive. This is not YOUR thread.
shareActually the films of Wes Anderson particularly 'Bottle Rocket' (1996), have probably had more of an impact on his work, than a mediocre fluke shot like Napolean Dynamite has. Yes, i can see Night of the hunter influence, a film that was very ahead of its time. Also Sam Fuller's earlier stuff seems to be a influence stylistically. Hes a great filmmaker New Zealand should be very proud, meanwhile Australias still trying to claim Rolf De Heer.

The style and tone of Waititi's films have been around since long before Napoleon Dynamite. Boy is essentially an expansion (and rejigging) of his (Oscar nominated) short film Two Cars, One Night which was released in the early 2000s.
The lazy Napoleon Dynamite comparison is brought up due to Eagle vs Shark which was written around the same time as Two Cars, One Night.
If you really want to see 'his' style watch Two cars and Tama Tu (his other short). You'll see it is essentially the same.
I guess that means the ND director copies Taika's style ;).
Please explain why you think The Night of The Hunter was influential on this movie. That's the Robert Mitchum movie I presume.
sharejust jumping in on this convo, but am guessing he was referring to the plot? the father hiding the stolen loot. i thought the same thing, that's why i clicked on this topic.
shareShogun has 'LOVE' tattooed on the fingers of one of his hands, just like Mitchum's character does in Night of the Hunter. There was a brief close up of the tattoo but obviously not everyone would have noticed or made the connection. I'm 99% sure that's what the original poster was referring to
