What is your interpretation of this? (not interested in "woke" criticism, just the story)
There is a lot going on here, what do you think was in the real world and what wasn't ?
I got the sense that when Owen and Maddy, as kids, found an escape from their lives in the silly tv show. An escape from what they found was a scary world (she is gay, and he is unsure/unclear about his sexuality - he seems to suggest he is asexual, but some dreamlike moments later show him wearing feminine clothing, implying he is questioning his gender etc).
Near the end he narrates to the audience that he 'has his own family now' and that he loves them. I took this as a lie, whether he believes that lie I couldn't tell.
The nervous breakdown and the apologies he was giving people who were not even paying attention - this reminded me of Gen Z young people's anxieties (my kids and my friends' children included)
I wasn't sure how I felt about this movie after it ended, it made me think and ask myself what I thought about it.
