Something that wasn't quite clear to me--was Roderick playing Dupin from the beginning, and the entire plan was a scheme hatched by he and (probably moreso) Madeline? Or was it a change in the late stages, and they realized once they had the papers and were practicing how they could make the situation even better?

I think at first he was on Dupins side but after Madeline got involved she got in his ear and turned it so he was then playing him, i think Roderick's intentions were honourable at first until he realised his life would be nothing if he did the right thing.
