Well that was depressing as hell.
Well, it was.
Nothing happy about it.
I need to watch a comedy now :(

Well, if it's THAT depressing, It's a good thing I'll be showing two classic movies the night after I show this to my movie group.
I'm the kind of guy, when I move - watch my smoke. But I'm gonna need some good clothes though.
It was so depressing, I'm actually mad. I wish I'd never watched it, because it really bothered me. Films don't usually affect me that way. Maybe your group will feel differently, but yes... it's probably best that you're following it up with something else. I certainly had to! Bleak movie.

I didn't find it all that depressing and think the final scene lightened it a bit more than the original ending shown on the DVD would have.
However, I can see that it might be depressing to the women in my group. I think I'll lighten it by showing the music videos from the extras after the film.
And as I mentioned, after showing this Friday night, I'll be showing BRINGING UP BABY (screwball comedy with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn) and A NIGHT AT THE OPERA with the Marx Brothers on Saturday night.

Do people need all sunshine and roses to watch a good film?
shareThis has been a year of movies that are on the depressing side: RABBIT HOLE, BLUE VALENTINE, BIUTIFUL...compared to those, this wasn't all that depressing.
Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies
Did you fly United???? Or Continental? I just watched it on a plane ride, kind of missed the beginning, but as I got drawn in I was really hurt by the ending.
I was so confused by Tim McGraw. I saw Friday Night Lights so I accept that he can play a douche, but you can hardly blame him for feeling bitter...it just seemed like it hurt him to be too close or too far away from her.
What do you all think?
Talking monkey, yeah, yeah. Came here from the future, ugly sucker, only says "ficus".

Totally depressing. I almost never cry at the end of a film but for some reason this just hit me. About halfway through I knew she was going to kill herself after she had the "best" show of her life. It was foreshadowed many times through the film.
I think the saddest part is that we have to realize as human beings that sometimes people have just "had enough".....they cannot live their lives any more regardless of if they are a waitress or a country music star. We all have our breaking points.
I think for people having life issues who are wondering "can I go on?" it makes us think. How far can we go or do we want to go?
I just loved when she said "Sweetheart, that's how it's done" as her last words.
A total tragedy.
This movie was depressing. It had some pretty good moments but McGraw's character really made me angry when he just couldn't get it together to try to talk to her about losing their baby and her drinking and what made her so fragile to begin with. My questions were why couldn't he understand or even try to slow down enough to realize that she was working too hard. If it were me she would have stopped stage touring as soon as she found out she was pregnant. What really made me the most angry besides the writers needlessly having Paltrow's character kill herself was when McGraws character was dancing with her in the classroom and they were where they were before when everything was okay and maybe they could have ran out back or something and cried and talked out the loss of their child ....but noooo they just have the husband/ manager leave her there by herself like some punk. Man that made so angry because I could see in that moment in her eyes that I think she gave up and then planned to kill herself. This movie should have been about a country star that fell from grace and fought back and found herself again and her husband again but it was just messed up because she deserved a second chance. We didn't deserve this sucker punch of a movie. I rented this movie and made a copy but have now quickly thrown it in the trash and not recommending it to any fans of country music. I am pretty certain that I am not alone on this one. Have a nice day everyone and Happy Fathers Day.

Newsflash: Life IS depressing.

The movie just premiered on Starz here in the U.S. tonight, so there will probably be more posts on this thread!
Yeah, I gotta say, the ending really hit me. (Spoiler Alert) Having Kelly just die like that was really sad. And, the funeral procession just made the sadness even more so. But, when Chiles walks into the bar at the end, that's when I teared up! Dang.
It's not a very good movie and I say this not because it's depressing or had a questionable ending but because it had a very "soap opera" feel to it. Almost as if this was a made for TV movie that you would see running during the day on the Liftime network when no one is watching. Everyone in the movie has issues and the story just plain sucks. So much more could have been done with the story to improve it. For one thing, it was totally lame to have Beau pretending to be her "sponsor" at the begining and then all of the sudden, out of nowhere, he's a country singer and touring with Kelly.
Plus, it took too long for us to really understand what happened "in Dallas" that made Kelly go off the deep end. All we know is that she's a person struggling with alchohol. This made the film seem really cliche, seriously, who hasn't seen a movie about someone struggling with drugs and/or alchohol? The thing is, they didn't need to make this about a person with a drug problem.
Sucky film... I'd give it a rating of about 5 out of 10. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone either. About the only thing good about it was the soundtrack. I did enjoy some of the songs in the movie like Country Strong, that was a good song. Chances Are was a good song aswell. They could have made a good movie here to go along with the soundtrack but it turned out to be slightly below average film.
It's life for many people, depressing or not.
