Proves Leighton Meester can act

No matter how the film does, Country Strong will probably be remembered as Leighton Meester's break-out film. Simply put, she proved that she can act (and _sing_ for that matter, but above all, act). Leighton had a _very different_ role in this movie from Gossip Girl or her other upcoming movie, the Roommate, _stepped into the role_ and nailed it.

Not to diss GG or The Roommate, but Meester's performance as the "damaged but still smiling smalltown prom queen" Chiles Stanton could put her in the league of other younger actresses now destined to have long careers in Hollywood like Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway.

Totally agree. I have always loved her but I was thinking to myself I can't wait to see where she is in 10 years. She's amazing

I actually think it proves that she can't act. I don't even know if I've ever seen her in anything else, but I thought she was terrible. Maybe it was just her character, but I didn't care for her at all. I thought she was right up there with Kristen Stewart as an actress.

I sure wish IMDB had a "like" button feature on its comments.

Interesting comparison to Kristen Stewart, though I saw KS in Adventureland and thought she did a good job there.

I liked LM's character, Chiles Stanton, in Country Strong because despite evident adversity, like in the Sara Evans song that she sang during one of the concerts in the movie, she "put a smile on" and went on. I find a lot of strength in that.

I also frankly liked that there was a lot _suggested_ but _left unsaid_ in the script. It's a lot like life. You don't necessarily know everything about everyone.

Chiles came from a past that was at least partly evident if you read between the lines. But the viewer has to be attuned to the need to do that. Today's scripts often give the audience a "God's view" of the characters and so the audience becomes lazy expecting that everything that one needs to know about the characters will be presented in often graphic detail. Again, life isn't like that.

In this movie, the only one who could find / read into the missing pages in Chiles' past, was, in fact, Kelly and not by "hiring a private eye" but through life experience and connecting the dots. This becomes clear in the scene where Kelly talks to Chiles to give her advice near the end of the movie, there is something of a surprise there, but the audience is invited then to look back and to realize that it was there from the beginning. Without a doubt, LM's character was the "strong one." Kelly, in fact, advises her to become softer (not to make LM's Chiles less of a competitor but to make Chiles a happier person and make her life correspond more closely to the, yes, beautiful smile that she was always carrying).

Anyway, I get the sense that we probably look for different things in a movie. I thought that LM played the "smiling" Chiles Stanton remarkably well and with remarkable depth. The smile was always there, but if one paused to look further there was more there than just the smile.

Excellent analysis and very well said! I also think that Leighton Meester did a wonderful job in this movie. She gave what could have easily been a shallow, one dimensional, hated character some depth, and I found her very likable. Not to mention her singing which was very good as well.

I would give credit here to the script as well (and perhaps to the whole genre of Country Music).

One of the things that confuses a lot of people about this movie is that its two younger stars (LM but also Garrett Hedlund) play the movie's most likable and even most important characters.

I don't think that's an accident. Historically, the world of Country Music has _very kind_ to new talent and the script reflects this very well.

Consider simply that the same acts that were at the top of the charts in Rock and Roll _decades ago_ remain the biggest acts in that genre of music today (The Rolling Stones, Springsteen, U2 ...).

In the same space of time, Country music has produced something like four of five generations of new talent -- Johnny Cash/Lorreta Lynn, Glenn Campbell/John Denver/Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks/Reba/Tim McGraw/Faith Hill and currently Brad Paisley/Carrie Underwood/Taylor Swift (I'm just listing off the top of my head...)

Anyway, the same ethos seemed to have applied to the movie script here (set in the world of Country Music) -- The young actors, LM and GH were clearly given the best/most likable parts (and the older actors did not seem to mind).

That both the young actors took their parts and ran with them, is great as well. Serious youth friendly scripts are often hard to find...

Why is it that whenever somebody doesn't care for a character, they immediately put it down to bad acting? Sheesh. D'you ever stand back and think that maybe its just you? I thought she did an amazing job.

reply

Are you kidding me? She was a country singing Blair Waldorf. Besides, doing chick flicks, romcoms and one terrible horror flick doesn't at all proves that she's a good, capable actress, but that her acting range is very narrow and that she's probably afraid of taking risks acting-wise. And this movie is definetely not her break out role. I'll bet you a thousand bucks that she's still a relatively unknown actress who will always be remembered as Blair Waldorf (just like Jennifer Aniston will always be Rachel).

reply

In this movie, LM proved that she is both willing and able to step into roles of a far greater range than teeny-bopper "rom-coms" and "horror movies."

I agree with you, if she didn't take a chance with a role like this (and then _nail_ it), she's be condemned to rom-coms forever.

Now she proved that she both can act and wants to act. She doesn't have to be Jennifer Aniston, she can be Amy Adams.

And good for her!

While I adore Leighton I think comparing her to Oscar nominated actress like Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams is a bit of a stretch. She was very good and certainly proved what I knew all along, the girl can act. (I also agree this will probably serve as her breakthrough role and she's gotten more attention for it than other cast members) However, I don't think she has proven to be an Oscar contender quite yet. She's a good actress who could have a long-lasting career with the right roles but right now she's "the girl from Gossip Girl" and that's not going to change unless she starts picking mature roles.

reply

I agree with you here. That's why I'm happy that she took a role like this one.

Amy Adams could have tagged as "Giselle" forever or Anne Hatheway as "the girl from the Princess Diaries." That LM was willing to take this role and then _nail it_ was a _great signal_ to casting agents throughout the industry that LM is both (1) willing to take varied roles and (2) _able to play them_.

I think that's a matter of opinion. I think Leighton has the potential to be better than BOTH of them.

I'm wondering how long it will be before THE ORANGES in which she's starring with Adam Brophy and Catherine Keener is released.

Isn't Hugh Laurie in it, too?

"Isn't Hugh Laurie in it, too?"

Yeah, he is. I don't watch that much TV, so I fear his isn't that familiar a name to me.

Oh he's fantastic. Apparently his and Leighton's characters fall in love in the movie. That may seem a little weird if you're not familiar with who he is, but Hugh and Leighton had really good chemistry in that episode of House she guested in, so it's gonna be quite good.

I think it proved without a doubt that all 4 main characters are very capable actors. I didn;t plan on seeing this movie (I was having a bad day and a friend suggested we go as a distraction) but I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of the story and the acting.

reply

I just watched it. I think Leighton Meester did a respectable job. And I was quite surprised with Garrett Hedlund - a good kind of surprise. And the movie, in its entirety, was better than I thought it would be.

I had never heard of Leighton Meester, but she was indeed impressive in this film. I hope to see more of her.

I enjoyed her singing, but it's her acting that will attract me to future movies she appears in.

Yes -- she can act; but I knew this from the ultimate Guilty Pleasure known as Gossip Girl. (admitting this kind-of makes me want to hide) ;)

She's good ... simple as that.

One of the "recommended links" on the bottom of the IMDB homepage last week named the 25 BEST female roles on television ... and Meester's Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl made the cut!

You almost, but not quite, make me want to watch the boob tube more often. Even so, Gossip Girl hardly sounds like my choice of viewing fare. On the other hand, now I just might watch it to get a better idea ofLeighton Meesler's talents.

I thought she looked good in her underwear.

I don't know the actress, haven't seen her in anything before. But I thought she did a good job playing that part. Actors and actresses can't help but put a little bit of themselves in each role, some mistake that for a character they may be famous for, but actually it's just them.

I think this is very true with this particular young lady. There is something very nice radiating from her. IMHO.

I agree with you 100% here. I knew who Meester was, due to all the media attention around GG; but I had never seen her in anything other than Monte Carlo (took my young cousin to see it for a girls day out). I was very impressed by her character acting in CS. I've always been one to really notice body language and see beyond the superficial... but that might be because I would never watch anything with the word Gossip in the title.
