I know you prefaced your comment by saying you weren't trying to be condescending but you are by discounting a genre of music that has probably the largest fan base of any. Country fans are very loyal and they actually account for a large portion of concert ticket sales. Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts...need I go on? Oh, and let's not forget Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood...need I still continue? The country music of today may be different than that of 10 or 20 years ago but it is FAR from a dead genre. Just take a look at the country music award shows...people from other genres like Rihanna and Steven Tyler can be seen doing duets with Sugarland and Carrie Underwood and they can reach a whole new audience.
Yes, I meant worldwide, not in America. And even there, those artists you listed, the new ones especially, are more like pop-alternative country, not pure one like Keith Urban or Ryan Adams. That kind of music that is presented in the movie.
I understand you meant worldwide but still, it is an evolving genre of music, just like rock and roll. The new form of country is accepted more worldwide but one must acknowledge where its roots are. It is a true American form of music and the type presented in the film does have its own fan base that still sells out arenas and concert halls
That is very common. We tend to base our opinions(or what we see as facts) based on our own little world. I used to absolutely hate country until I heard Shania Twain in the mid 90's. Back then, she was more country than she is now. Then, I started listening to other artists and I realized how unique of a genre it actually is. Country songs like to tell stories. People easily categorize it as a simple form of music or music for stupid people but it's really not. I have a wide variety of people that I know and no one listens to hip-hop, so should I state that hip-hop is a dead genre?
Haha, I was gonna suggest that hip-hop is dead too. Old hip hop was the best. Tupac. I guess everything was more genuine back then. I loved Shania's 90s stuff too. She was lovely. I liked LeAnn Rimes too. Not sure if she counts as Country, but her Coyote Ugly album was amazing.
Thanks again for the insight. I'm glad I learned something about the genre. :)
I think pure country is dying, it's being replaced with this country-pop mix, which is good and bad. I grew up on country music (and I am Canadian), and I still love country from the 80s and 90s, but it's more a nostalgic thing now, because if these were the type of songs being put out now, I don't think country would have a big following. It is changing like everything, it's just the way it goes.... Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum all play on country stations and pop stations, Reba McEntire is covering Beyonce songs, I just saw Little Big Town did a cover of Lady Gaga's Born This Way... it is evolving and staying fresh which I think is really what's keeping it so popular.
Thank you! That't what I meant with my post. Because the movie discusses this kind of country music it made me realize how dead it is now. You're right, everything in music is changing. Every genre is being commercialized and popularized. Rock is dead as well. Most of the initially rock bands have now morphed into electronic pop and claiming to be alternative.
So yeah, I'm with you. Country music back in the day was mesmerizing and quite inspiring, now it's been torn apart by money-hungry attention seekers who have no soul.
Have you ever heard of Mindy Smith or Kathleen Edwards? Both are female country singers. I suggest you check them out. I believe the latter is Canadian, if I'm not mistaken.
There are plenty people that are too cool for country or simply don't like it because they think it is whiney like my husband. But here in MI which is not the south pretty much all Anglos love it and anyone into music a lot like Latinos and some African-Americans like it as well. So the fact that it is here in MI I think says something. I am more into the pop type country myself. I really just love anything that makes me move.
When a country singer makes BILLIONS like jay-z or sean p diddy combs or is as universally loved and profitable as eminem or the black eye'd pea's or little wayne then u can say that but the reality is country music is dying and it is a dumb redneck music i mean for god sakes it wasn't that long ago billy ray syrus was at the top of it are you stupid enough to actually think billy ray syrus is talented????
Also PS carry underwood and tyler swify are listed as POP STAR'S not country music star's and kenny chesny's career peeked in 2005 he's on the down slide in his career there is a reason tim magrow left country music for acting. Modern country music is completely expendable. It's synthetic and emotionless and easily discarded. There are some AMAZING and BRILLIANT classic country songs that are worth any music fans time to try and discover.
I love the old country like Tex Ritter, the Sons of the Pioneers, Red Foley, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Lynn Anderson, Anne Murray, Loretta Lynn, etc., but just don't get much out of the modern version. Brad Paisley is the only one I can think of that I've liked recently.
I'm the kind of guy, when I move - watch my smoke. But I'm gonna need some good clothes though.
Just goes to show people have entirely different views of the same things. I personally think Kenny Chesney's "Boys of Fall" (a song about high school football) is more melodic and the lyrics better than anything I ever heard from George Jones. I also am sick of hearing "Mine" by Taylor Swift but think most everything else she's ever sung is better than Tanya Tucker or Crystal Gale. In either case clearly we both care about some form of country music, as do most folks these days.
"Tanner got into a fight." "With who?" "The 7th grade."
Country music is the only kind of music, in this economy, in which the sales have remained steady and not decreased. Although I could care less if Taylor Swift ever sold another CD.
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son.
You are ignorant, aren't you? Country is the most popular genre of music in the United States today. Here in the Baltimore area, for example its the second most popular radio station after the mix stations. Many American cities have multiple country stations and country shows are always sold out is a multi billion dollar industry. You need to go to a Sugarland, Taylor Swift, or Toby Keith concert and see how popular this kind of music is. Away from the Northeast and California, the majority of Americans like country music, as do large numbers of Canadians and Australians.
In contrast some other genres like rap, hip hop, heavy metal, screamo, and death metal should not really be considered music.
I live in northern NJ and we don't even have a country radio station here, so it's a weird concept for anyone in this part of the Northeast to grasp that country is the most popular genre of music in the US. I guess I'll take your word for it.
In contrast some other genres like rap, hip hop, heavy metal, screamo, and death metal should not really be considered music.
I like Metal but yeah, rap, hip hop and screamo are pretty much crap genres. Some may not like the current style of country but it's all well written music, yes, even Taylor Swift's music is well written. I can't say the same thing for other genres now days. In an era of lip-synchers and voice machines, and poor musicianship, country offers a nice alternative. I kind of view today's country being more like rock rather than pop. Take a song like Comin' To Your City by Big 'n Rich. That songs rocks big time but still has a country sound to it which gives the song it's own unique feel that you just don't get from other genres now days. I would recommend watching a Country Music awards show. They put on a great show and it usually features live performances by all of the best country artists of today.

Come on, get it together Stickman. If you are a fan of music, you should be able to realize that there are no "crap" genres. Personally, I can't stand the majority of Country music, mainly bc so much of it these days is just glorified Pop (notice I didn't say all of it). But I would never say it is a "crap" genre, because music is subject to opinion, and since I dislike the genre it obviously means I don't have much knowledge of it. I feel the same way about Screamo and Death-Metal, I don't enjoy them but I would never say they are "crap" genres because obviously there are people out there who enjoy it.

Your an idiot Country music is in no way shape or form the most popular genre of music in the united states that would be POP MUSIC fallowed by rap then rock then r&b then possibly country i also hate to tell you but almost EVERY american city has multiple rap, rock, pop and r&b stations country show's are not always sold out outside of the top few country stars (many of whom are considered pop and not country) it's rare for a country music concert to sell out which is why most of them play small clubs and bars that are easy to sell out.
You say that other genres of music like hip hop and rap and heavy metal and screamo?? and death metal shouldn't be consided music yet when was the last time a country star made BILLIONS like jay z or sean p diddy combs?????? when was the last time a country star was universally loved and and respected and talented like eminem and little wayne???? when was the last time a true country song hit the top of the bill boards top 100 like slip knot and matallica??????? just going by sales and talent alone country music is the genre that shouldn't be considered music no one likes true country outside of a few ignorent retarded cowboy wanna be's with an iq of 10 spread between them.
And PS tyler swift and sugarland are considered POP MUSIC not country and no one cares about toby keith outside of a few drunken ignorent retards which is why his country music career and acting career are both in the toilet. I dislike country music, but I realize it has a huge fan base. How many other types of music have two huge different award shows devoted to them? Technically country is covered by the Grammys as well. That's three award shows. If it were a dead genre, no one would be watching those award shows. No one would care that Taylor Swift won. Paltrow wouldn't be singing about country if it weren't popular.
Yes come to the south in the USA thats pretty much the main stations on the radio. To me pop is a dying genre but idk. If you live in the south, you grow up on country music. Idk about anywhere else.
I love how people in the south think they have a monopoly on liking country. Man, if you stepped outside my house in Michigan, you'd think you were in Alabama. Cornfields, bean fields, tractors as far as the eye can see. We love country up here. People equate Michigan with Detroit when 80% is open land / forested land.
I think country music is just like any other kind of music. You like what you like and stay loyal to it. I'm 26 and from the South so I grew up on country. My mother hated it (still rarely likes any of it) so I can't say it was an influence from how I grew up. My dad loves Willie Nelson, but I do NOT like his music. I heard it on the radio when I was little and I just knew I liked the sound. The thing I love most about country is the songs tell a story. Sometimes it about cheating husbands or a the death of a wife or even a loyal hunting dog. It can be depressing or bubblegum happy. My point is it's not for everyone, but those who do listen love it. Same with Rock or Rap. I can't figure out for the life of me why someone would listen to rap or heavy metal, but if it makes people happy then why not.
