Well put. I think you summed it up perfectly.
And as unlikely as such a moment probably is, it really struck a chord with me. To see him seeing that person she used to be and remember the love he felt for her and need to take her in his arms and hold onto her and that feeling for just a moment...guh, what can I say? I'm a sucker for sentiment. And the moment when he came back to reality and broke away, I could almost see his realization that it was just a glimpse of the old Kelly and that the addicted Kelly would come again to take her place and break his heart all over again. I think Tim McGraw did a great job of portraying all of those emotions. I'm increasingly impressed with him as an actor.
Your kidding right??? I thought he was awful and he needs to stick to his ok singing career. Maybe thats why he is trying the acting thing. He doesnt have good acting skills at all, not enough to be in movies they try and push off as great.
shareWell no I'm not kidding. I wrote what I felt. This would be one of those different tastes for different people moments. I respect your opinion. I just don't share it.
Maybe it's because I have someone in my life with addiction issues. Whatever the reason, his performance in those moments I noted rang true for me and I was genuinely impressed by the way he conveyed those feelings. Any time I have a moment where I see the look on a character's face and feel like I know what he/she is thinking or feeling and I can feel it with him/her, I feel their performance has been a success. At least in reaching me. Not every performance will reach every person. We like what we like and that's ok. For me his portrayal connected. For you it didn't. Fair enough.
I loved that scene. His walking away after being so drawn to her was honest and raw. The music making everyone dance - well, the entire band was there, except for perhaps the drummer, although I think he may have come along too with some sort of modified percussion instruments. I loved that scene because it seemed spontaneous, and the dialogue and song coming from Paltrow's character seemed spontaneous. It brought tears to my eyes.
shareI'm in the "yeah...but it worked!" camp, which has been well represented here and very eloquently expressed in the preceding posts. I can see why people question it but I disagree, I don't think it was false. imo it worked, rang true and was an important moment in the film.
I especially disagree op when it comes to the intimate, meaningful moment analysis. I don't think it began as one, that's what it became. It showed so much in such a subtle way.
I actually could see it happening. I don't think either of them meant for it to be so intimate. I think he danced with her because he felt his love and respect for her come flooding back (seems perfectly appropriate to dance with your wife during that impromptu classroom hoedown). If she had been less messed-up, it would have just been a nice, sweet moment, since they were in a classroom with a bunch of kids. But she was so fragile and close-to-the-edge that she just couldn't hold it together, and it ended up being an intimate moment in an inappropriate location.
"And then he started cheating...especially at magnetic travel scrabble."
