Beau's Grimy Hat

WTF? Couldn't the wardrobe folks give Beau a new hat after he had a few gigs with Kelly? I got tired of looking at that dirty, grimy, funky, nasty-looking white cowboy hat. At one point he had a new black hat (towards the end of the movie) but then in the Cali bar it was back to the eponymous hat...

Garrett found the hat on top of Neal Casal's refrigerator and asked him if he could have it for the movie. Neal is the lead guitarist for Ryan Adams and the Cardinals and he appeared in the movie in Kelly's band and also taught Garrett how to play guitar. It was grimy, but I think it's authentic grime, lol

And now he's rockin' with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood!

Actually, his hat being grimy like that is more realistic. Men that wear cowboy hats get them broken in, they don't wear nice clean hats all the time. Go to any honky tonk like Beau loved to sing in, & chances are the men will be wearing hats that are not pristeen. His clothes were very down to earth & very casual as well as well worn, too. So, it made sense that his hat was similar. & as far as the black hat, that appeared to be just for the funeral scene, he was also wearing a black shirt & jacket with it. It made sense he would go back to his comfortable broken-in hat once he moved out to CA.

Also, since he acquired the hat from Neal Casal like maxiekat said, then it makes even more sense that he only wore that hat in the movie.

Not sure what honky tonks you go to but here in Nashville the singers and bands in the downtown bars dress nice...lol They take pride in the way they look even if they wear the same thing every gig they look good. I havent ever seen some singer wearing a hat that looked like that. EVER!!!

I can't believe no one pointed out that the hat was supposed to be symbolic of Beau being so down to earth. I felt like the movie was implying there may have been some sort of wardrobe struggle where he (the character) was asked to wear something nicer and refused.

He kept the same hat he wore in the honky tonk bar because he retained the same values he had there.

Haaahaa I thought I was the only one who felt that way. It was driving me crazy. I felt like he needed to wash his hair or something.

I agree about the hair and really everything about his hygiene. Dirty hat, dirty looking greasy hair means smelly man...B.O...... I have said this before here when this was mentioned about his hat being really dirty through the whole movie, that living in Nashville area and been to many of the downtown bars/clubs/honky tonks...how ever you want to say that,....the singers and band members dress nice and do not look like they were living under a bridge. Sorry but they got this all wrong. Nothing like maybe taking that hat and having it dry cleaned no matter who you got it from after you earned s few bucks from some gigs. They tried to hard in making him look like a struggling singer/song writer to the point where it really wasnt realistic at all. my husband was a musician in Nashville for years and I dont care how hard your struggling your hair looks washed and you certainly wouldnt wear a hat that look like a cow sprayed it.I remember this one singer about 23 yrs ago ( I wont mention a name) but in his motel room and I mean a cheap old motel, he had notes everywhere to inspire him and had about 4 cowboy hats sitting around and although he worse torn jeans with holes in the leg part ( to which is his look to this day) he was clean and hair washed and always took pride in a clean hat. Like I said the movie got this all wrong I dont care even if they were trying to show this struggling down to earth guy. Are they trying to say that a down to earth struggling musician ='s a dirty greasy nasty man.....I dont think so....

I kept wondering if Beau was ever gonna clean up and take a shower. His hair looked dirty, but I do recall one scene with Kelly where they both had had showers.

Just some producer thinking they know the industry. But I agree an old grimy hat and old clothes when you are on tour makes no sense. It was like he wasn't really all that into it.

And he wasn't.

Nashville is the home of fake pop country where nobody writes their own music and everybody conforms to an image. Maybe not all true artists believe that you need to look good to make decent music.

reply

I'm not familiar with the Nashville scene specifically, but I knew musicians in Austin who did "alternative" country, and they "dressed down" and yes I guess you could say looked dirty. I also knew the other type of country musicians you're talking about who did not look dirty and wore very smart clothes and a clean hat.

So, there is more than one type of country musician, and yes, the grimy, unwashed looking type that Garrett Hedlund played in this movie does exist; they are more like a Gram Parsons or a Steve Earle.

The one thing that did bother me about the hat though...when he took it off and put it down when sitting at the keyboard, he put it brim-side down, which is a no-no. The people I knew who wore a cowboy hat always turned it upside down when placing it on a surface. It's considered to "keep the luck in" the hat - but also airs it out.

eponymous?

Didn't distract me from his gorgeous voice one bit.
