With the possible exception of the Man and Doris, all the characters are normal, typical, americans. Most important is that their tasks, at times the most horrible of sins, are ones they agree to do without coercion. Invariably, they convince themselves that the ends justifies the means.
This can be disturbing, since americans rarely think of themselves as child killers, terrorist bombers, bank robbers, et al. But, as the Man always reminds them, whether you do the task or not is entirely your choice. All the Man does is offer you a mirror reflecting the desires of your own dark soul.
