There are some unexplained plotholes/ issues left unresolved.

Jake never explains the reason he signed up last minute for the same hiking trip as Helen. Was is it because he was losing his eyesight or to see her? Did he knew she was going? Was it both?

Jake also never explains what the whole "girl back at home" thing meant. We're to assume he was talking about her, but it's never explained, and he just shows back up after she left pretty much for that reason.

q1) the former , he joined last min when he learned she was going

q2) the "girl back at home" was Helen . He said to one of the others , probaly the black girl who fancied him , "I have thing for/with a girl back home" , meaning Helen , as they wernt letting the others know they knew each other.
It backfired a bit when Helen also misunderstood .
